According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the national abortion rate has plummeted over the course of the past decade.
The U.S. abortion rate reached a record low in 2014, for the first time falling below its level in 1973—the year abortion became legal nationwide.1 The January 2017 publication of these new abortion data coincides with the arrival of the Trump administration and the 115th Congress, both hostile toward abortion rights and toward programs and policies that ensure access to affordable contraceptive care. The federal government is widely expected to pursue far-reaching policy changes that will have a negative impact on reproductive health and rights.
