Early on a June afternoon San Jose Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire in Kelley Park near downtown San Jose. The fire was burning in an open grass field and into a gully with heavy scrub leading to a creek. Once the fire got into the heavy brush the incident was escalated to a Tier 2 Wildland response. In addition to the Tier 2 response from San Jose Fire, CalFire was requested to respond Copter 106 and two hand crews. Fire crews were on scene for 6 hours plus dealing with the 15 acre fire. Here CalFire Copter 106 is in air attack mode. In 1981, CalFire acquired 12 UH-1F helicopters from the Air Force. They were modified for fire fighting and used by CalFire until 1990 when they were replaced by newer, highly modified, Vietnam-era UH-1H helicopters. Referred to as the “Super Huey”, CalFire has nine available statewide. To see the full set from this incident check out YourFireDepartment.org - Roberts IC
