Creating a great portrait photo is one of the most difficult and challenging tasks for a photographer. In order to take a really eye-catching and natural photo, a photographer has to take a deep look inside a model’s inner world to reveal a secret within the person and transform all the things we saw and learned into one single picture.

The models are all Geisha. For these studio sessions they were stripped of their kimono, and their normal, classic hair-dos completely washed out. The unknown Japanese photographer who took these shots seemed to prefer the Geisha when they were released from the confines of their all-encompassing Kimono, and having their natural hair set free from the heavily oiled and coiffed hair-do that was a part of the job. This exception was usually made when the photographer hired the Geisha (and the younger Maiko) as studio models to take on the roles of other classes and customs of women in Japan. However, these simple black and white images of minimally-dressed Geisha with their long hair undone are some of the most stunning, especially considering the time and place they were taken. So much class and sass, filled Hollywood before the 70’s were in full swing and the ‘free love movement began to wipe out that old Hollywood glam that first kicked off in the late 20’s-early 30’s. It went from men in suits to jeans and T-Shirts.
Nada tan impresionante como una gran tormenta... bueno, quizá sí: una tormenta retratada dramáticamente en blanco y negro.
