Published in 1893 by MacMillan and Company, Coaching Days and Coaching Ways written by Outram Tristam is a fascinating account of stage coach travel in the 19th century on the great roads in England complete with 214 illustrations. Coaching Days features the work of not one but two illustrators, each with his own specialty. Herbert Railton (1857-1910) provided the scenery and buildings, especially the coaching inns that the book describes so lovingly. Hugh Thomson (1860 1920) is responsible for the human figures. The illustrations are carried over from the original serial publication, which lists each artist's contribution in scrupulous detail.
