A ladybug may not be what you expect to see as a unique ceramic piece but that is just what this is. This ladybug is black and red fabric with personality. The red fabric is decorated with hearts and flowers, the black fabric is covered with white hearts and swirls. She is small, like all lady bugs, although a bit bigger than a real ladybug; just 3 inches wide. All Critters n Calico are made in Texas. Every one will come with a small sample of the fabrics used in the design. ~ This is an introduction to my art, Critters-n-Calico. The “Critters” started 20+ years ago when I needed something to do as I recovered from a car accident. The technique was totally developed by me. I’d never taken a class and had never seen another art process to develop the critters. All Critters-n-Calico starts with a ceramic figurine. I have also used interesting figurines made from paper mâché or plaster of Paris. I have even covered a small figurine made of cement! The ceramic figurine is covered with a bright printed fabric using a water-based glue. When the fabric placement is complete and smooth, two-part epoxy is applied. There are usually 6 coats of epoxy for each critter. Between each epoxy coat, I wait 24 hours. Then, using a Dremel tool and sandpaper, I remove any “pokies” or sharp edges from lifted fabric threads. After the 4th coat, each critter gets eyes and any small details painted on the faces. That is the only place the Critters-n-Calico are painted. Sometimes more coats of epoxy are needed to get the super smooth finish. When the epoxy is finally finished, I glue heavy Pellon (felt like material) onto the bottoms. Critters-n-Calico are made one at a time and each one is unique. The time needed for just one critter can be as long as 2 weeks. Every Critters-n-Calico is handmade from start to finish. Each is one of a kind. Because they are handmade, you may notice slight imperfections that do not distract from the beauty of the piece. The process of making my Critters-in-Calico allows them to be loved inside your home for many years. They are not only beautiful, but they are also not fragile. I have dropped them at times without breaking. Of course, the very thin legs of horses, etc., should be protected. Critters-n-Calico can be used outside without cracking, yellowing or graying for several years, if ever. The goblets and dishes are food safe although I would suggest only handwashing and no microwaves or hot liquids.
