This wall hanging instantly brings to mind an antique quilt. The traditional 9-patch block was often pieced to make use of remnants of clothing or other used fabrics that were no longer serviceable for their original purpose. But this art quilt takes the term "remnant" to a new level. The nine squares that make up the tiny 2 1/4" blocks are each 3/4" square. These blocks have a shaded half-square triangle block separating each pieced square which produces a secondary pattern of light and dark shadows. The centre of the wall hanging has a soft pinwheel design created from softly contrasting fabrics. The fabrics used for the 9-patch blocks are a mixture of prints and colours amassed over many years of sewing and collecting. The result is a antique looking quilt reproduced in miniature. This quilt can be used as a wall hanging or it would make a beautiful centre piece on a dining room table. It is finished with rows of machine quilting in a diagonal grid design to highlight the squares. The outer edge is encased with a double folded binding from a fabric that varies in shades which seems to produce a glowing effect. The back is a solid cream cotton with a sleeve attached to the top edge through which a rod can be inserted for hanging. I have created the sleeve in two pieces so that it could also be hung from hooks or small nails at the centre and/or from the outer corners. This quilted wall hanging measures approximately 24 1/2" square.
