This beautiful original 113-year-old antique print painted by Marianne Stokes is from the First Edition 1909 book “Hungary” by Adrian and Marianne Stokes. It measures 15.5cm x 22cm (6¼in x 8¾in), is signed in the plate and has a good margin for framing. The colours are still vibrant after all these years! There is minor tanning on the borders - to be expected because of its age. Adrian Stokes (1854- 1935) was an English landscape painter, and his wife, Marianne Stokes (1855-1927) was an Austrian painter, considered one of the leading women artists in Victorian England. They loved to travel, and in 1905 their travels took them to Hungary when it was not a well-known destination for British travellers. While Adrian focused mostly on portraying the beauty of the landscapes, small cottages, meadows and poplar trees, Marianne focused on capturing the local people with their interesting faces and vibrant traditional clothes. They returned to Hungary again in 1907 and 1908, and in October of 1909 Adrian published a book about their travels titled simply “Hungary”. Your order will be carefully packed to arrive safely.
