This Early 1900s Five-Gored Skirt sewing pattern was originally published by The Butterick Publishing Company ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ On the original packaging, the garment was described as a "Ladies' Five-Gored Skirt, having the Front-Gore Extended in a Circular Flounce to Give Depth to the Four Other Gores. (To be Plaited or Gathered at the Back and Made witha Sweep or in Round Length.) Sometimes called the Panel-Flounce Skirt." The skirt was advertised in the Delineator magazine, in December 1898, page 695, "The skirt is shaped with a very narrow front-gore extended in a circular flounce that gives depth to the gore at each side and to the two back-gores. It is fitted by single hip darts, and the slight fulness at the back may be folded in a backward-turning plait at each side of the placket, or it may be gathered, as preferred. The skirt may be in round length or made with a slight sweep. Fancy passementerie outlines the front-gore and conceals the joining of the flounce to the other gores." ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This Five-Gored Skirt pattern was designed to fit the size and shape of a 1910s woman with 20” waist and 36” hips. Farbic suggestions from the Delineator included, "Black Hercules braid or straps of material will trimly finish the skirt in tailor style, which fancy passmenterie or quillings of ribbon on the top and bottom of the flounce will be effective for dressy skirts of broadcloth or handsome crepon in the new fancy weaves. For plain or brocaded silk or satin this style will be specially effective, and ruchings or folds of the material will be suitable decorations. A severely plain finish may, however, be adopted." ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The package includes a copy of the original artwork and a sizing chart on the front cover. Inside the booklet are a material requirements chart and historical notes on the Butterick Company from the era.
