This piece of Real Honeycomb was found during a regular maintenance inspection or during a live bee removal. These pieces called Burr Comb are extra chunks of comb that the bees often build between and on top of frames or on the walls of the hive. Most beekeepers would remove these pieces and either throw it out or melt it down. I find these beautiful pieces and treat them like treasure! Facts: Honeycomb is the most resource intensive product that bees produce. It takes 2 million flowers to produce 1 pound of honey but it takes 8 pounds (16 million flowers) of honey to produce 1 pound of beeswax. Honeycomb is built by workerbees to store honey, pollen, and brood. Wax flakes are produced by young worker bees from glands on their abdomen and then shaped into hexagon cells. Smaller cells are for worker brood and larger cells for drones. Honeycomb starts off translucent white and turns yellow to brown with heat and use over time. Each honeycomb pendant is one of a kind. Some may contain real bee eggs, pollen, or honey. The natural color and shapes are unique and unaltered. Delicate Process These are the most complicated pieces to create due to the fragility of honeycomb. The resin used to preserve the honeycomb creates heat as it hardens and can often melt the honeycomb. The entire process will take over a month to create. Prices of the honeycomb pendants reflect the uniqueness, color, size, difficulty, and quality of the finished piece. 6% of all sales will be donated to The Xerces Society an international non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the lives of invertebrates that sustain us.
