The bowl has received first place in the segmented section of the 2024 Woodturners Society of Queensland annual competition with a score of 187 out of 200. The judges comments are at the end of the description. Unique open segmented bowl is made from Australian timbers: Western Rosewood, Crows Ash, Silver Ash and Rose Gum. The vase is constructed using a technique called open segmented turning. This is done by cutting timber boards that are 6mm high into segments. There are 48 pieces in each layer which means the segments are cut at a 3.75deg angle to make the trapezoidal shapes that will form a circle. The gap is 25% of the size of the trapezoidal piece which means the gap changes with the diameter of the bowl. There are 26 and so there are 1248 pieces to make up the bowl. See my articles, "Some Basics in Designing a Segmented Bowl – Part 1 and 2" at https://alswoodturning.wixsite.com/creations for more on segmented turning. Competition comments: Judge A: Pleasing flared design which shows off segments, Hard to fault, Extremely difficult to get all segments fitting, Judge B: Very complex design using multiple timbers to great effect, Excellent, Lots of detailed segmenting with complex design, Flawless.
