A beautifully hand painted faux grain decorated 19th century small dome-top trunk or chest in earthy tones of rust red, mustard yellow and black - some areas even a bit olive green due to the combination of the black and yellow! The underside of the lid is signed, "James Tucker". An attractive storage piece, its smaller size and various colors makes it quite suitable for a variety of spaces. Great for conveniently storing a warm throw blanket by the couch or in the bedroom safely protecting your children's treasured artworks - whatever you wish to be protected and still easily accessible. I purchased the trunk in NH. It was likely originally made in New England during the early 19th century. 24" L x 13 1/2" W x 10 1/2" H In very nice antique condition with minor wear to paint decoration. Still retains its original wrought iron nail-secured hardware including the iron lock (no key) and hinges (nails are twisted to help prevent loosening - see photo #10). Some age related cracks, most prominently across top of dome top. Staining to wood interior. All nail joinery, with t-head finishing nails to secure dome top, irregular somewhat round-headed nails to secure elsewhere. Shanks of nails securing the hardware appear (to me) to be square and hand forged (pre 1800), and the wood surrounding them is certainly black (color indicative of an early wrought iron nail). That being said, it is conceivable the shanks are rectangular (difficult to determine since they are twisted) and therefore after 1800. So, to be safe, I am going to say this is an early 19th century chest. 317.81A.50
