The Anatomical Venus Tapestry is 30" wide and 33" long. It features a center panel that is 20.5" x 23" and 471 square inches of dense hand embroidery. It features a stumpwork woman (made of sculpted and stuffed fabric that is then embroidered) with her chest and abdomen open to reveal her organs. All are three-dimensional needlework. She rests of a stuffed cushion and is flanked by two doctors, who are also raised from the ground fabric and densely embroidered. They hold glittering knives embellished with metallic thread. The background is completely filled in pale pink chain stitch and ornamented with floral motifs. There is a border of velvety upholstery fabric. Loops on the back allow this piece to be a wall hanging. I made this piece in memory of the unnamed and unclaimed women whose bodies furthered the interest of science and medicine.
