A Zibellino, or flea fur, was a popular fashion accessory from the late 15th century to the 16th century. Less well to do women would simply wear a marten fur, but wealthier women’s zibellino would be bejeweled with gold and stones and fine detail work like this example. Martens were believed to reproduce through the ear, and as such were associated with the miraculous conception of Christ and childbirth, and wearing a marten fur would be considered a fertility talisman. This print is 5x7, printed with flat gold, cranberry and federal blue inks.
