Hallmarked silver box in the form of an articulated fish with gemstone set red eyes. Hinged head and mouth open to hold trinkets or spices. Piece has both French and English hallmarks. Hallmark on head: London, 1902-3. "F" in oval escutcheon indicates foreign manufacture. (The Customs Act of 1842 made it illegal to import gold or silver wares in Great Britain and Ireland unless they had been assayed at British office. From 1867 silver articles produced outside Britain were assigned a distinctive mark of foreign origin-the letter F within an oval escutcheon-in addition to the standard British hallmarks.)
