Heading to Lisbon? Don't miss a visit to Carmo Convent, Lisbon's best historical site. To get to the Igreja do Carmo, take the neo-Gothic Santa Justa Elevator in Baixa. Don't just admire the ruined exterior; go inside! The Carmo Convent was founded in 1389, but destroyed in the gerat Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The church was never entirely rebuilt and intentionally left roofless. Inside the church, you'll see evocative ruins.
