Digitally enhanced and colourised, this eighty-year old photo of the battleship Haruna shows a wealth of detail and looks as fresh as the day it was taken. The ship makes a splendid sight as she makes high speed, having just completed her second major reconstruction. All four ships of this, the Kongo class, were rebuilt, and reclassified as fast battleships by the IJN, having begun life as battlecruisers. Haruna was the only one of the four to survive the war, albeit in a wrecked and semi-submerged condition. She was finally broken up in Kure in 1946.
