(see preview and thumbnails for more information) BASIC Music GENERAL KNOWLEDGE- for young piano students using U.S.A rhythm terminology 1) Information sheet This sheet contains the basic music general knowledge signs and symbols (U.S.A rhythm terminology) a piano student would need to know to play music at around AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) Grade 1. 2) 10 Individual basic music general knowledge quizzes. Each quiz contains 10 musical signs/symbols from the “Basic General Knowledge” information sheet. 3) Answers to the 10 quizzes. Each quiz is repeated with the answers written in red. The answers have been taken directly from the “Basic General Knowledge” information sheet. 4) Blanks for customisation. A blank “Basic General Knowledge” information page and a blank “Basic General Knowledge Quiz” sheet Customise the activities for your students by a} Adding different signs/symbols to the information sheet and, b} Making your own quizzes to focus on the areas your students need to improve. Purpose The purpose of these quizzes is to drill “Basic General Knowledge” into young students. I assign my students the “Basic General Knowledge” information sheet along with Quiz 1 to complete at home. Each week at their regular piano lesson I mark the quiz, give them a score out of 10, and hand them the next quiz. I also use my musical sign/symbol flash cards to reinforce their understanding of these “Basic General Knowledge” necessities during weekly piano lessons. NB: I always give my student the “mark” or the “point” as long as they can explain the meaning of the sign/symbol, even if they can’t remember the name. For example: if a student knows that a slur means to play smoothly, legato, but they can’t remember that it is called a slur, I still mark them ‘correct’. However, if they can remember it’s name but not it’s meaning, they only get half a mark or half a point - if you can remember that a slur is called a slur but can’t remember what it means, then it is not very useful knowledge. My students know one of my favourite sayings is “It’s always better to remember what it means than to remember what it’s called.” This set of quizzes is intended to follow along after my set of Basic Music Theory worksheets for beginner piano/keyboard students: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Basic-Music-Theory-PianoKeyboard-US-Rhythm-terminology-7775933 ©CHMT Catherine Hicks Music Tuition 2021
