The easiest way to ease back into a new school year after a long, summer break is this first days slideshow! Every detail you will ever need to cover with your students as they get back into the routines and procedures is included in this easy-to-edit document! The first week can be overwhelming - for the kids, but also for YOU! Creating and using this slideshow will be a built-in lesson plan for the first week back. When putting together my own slideshow, I map it around my day - when we will need breaks, specials, what must be shared on the first day vs. 5 days in, etc. There are a variety of brain break slides included that you can drag and move around in your slideshow. I love this option, as it's easy to do a lot of the talking on day 1 and 2. Using the brain breaks is a great, forceful reminder to tell myself to stop talking and to get the kids up and interacting with one another! This is a vocabulary supplement to use with 1st Grade Rooted in Reading ! This program is amazing! I needed more vocabulary practice with each lesson, so I created slideshows to use when introducing new words each week. Each word has pictures, questions, and interactive features to keep the kids engaged! This download includes a PowerPoint file and a link to the Google Slides version as well! The formatting should not be an issue at all since everything is flattened and secured. :) Try this lesson out for FREE to see if you like it before purchasing the others. This is also available in my August Vocabulary Slideshow bundle. Please note that these are not official Rooted in Reading products- Just a supplement that this Rooted in Reading lover created to add to the vocabulary instruction each week!

Introduce similes with this age-appropriate mini lesson. A PowerPoint presentation clearly explains and presents ten examples. A slideshow companion, worksheet, and poster help kid grasp this figurative language concept. Open the preview to take a closer look. First, introduce similes with a brief, engaging slideshow. It explains that similes compare things using like or as. These comparisons help the reader visualize or understand the situation. Then ten examples explore similes and their meanings. A companion worksheet lets kids take notes, if desired. The entire introduction takes only ten minutes! Second, ask kids to show what they know with an exit ticket. Kids analyze four dragon-themed sentences with similes and tell what they mean. Then they write their own dragon similes. Third, display a poster (or use it as an anchor chart.) This page reminds kids of the definition of a simile. It features four knight-themed examples. Files include everything you need to teach similes: 12-slide PowerPoint presentation Slideshow companion Worksheet or exit ticket Poster ELA resources can be used in a variety of ways. Whole class practice Test prep Small group work, remediation, or tutoring Homework Sub plans Your third, fourth, and fifth grade students will love it – and so will you! The medieval theme – with castles, dragons, knights and more – will engage your class. The brief lesson and worksheet are just the right length to hold their attention spans. Clear, straightforward materials focus on the concept. Activities address the intent of your standards. For example, if you teach CCSS L.3.5a, L.4.5a, or L.4.5a; Texas TEKS LA.3.10.D or 4.10.D; or Virginia SOL R.5.4.d, you can rest assured that students will master these figures of speech. Printable and digital versions of each worksheet are included. A PDF provides a printable option. Easel Activities offer digital versions. Looking for more? Grab the similes and metaphors bundle, which includes lessons, a writing activity, and more. Enjoy teaching! Brenda Kovich
