In 2002, British sculptor Antony Gormley was commissioned to create ‘something different’ for the Inside Australia project of the Perth International Arts Festival. Gormley produced 51 figures made from steel and placed them across seven square km of the salt lake. The project proved so successful that the statues were not dismantled when the festival ended and they now exist on Lake Ballard as a unique tourist attraction for the region.
