That's the theme of this whimsical book Gv and I recently investigated: Your Magnificent Chooser This book is a traditional hardback, complete with dust jacket. And I know it probably sounds crazy, but the dust jacket completely impressed me. It feels thicker than typical, flimsy book jackets and the quality of the paper used is like none I've encountered before - it's almost like the cover has been coated in wax, it feels so sturdy. Once I got over my excitement about the cover, I quickly flipped through the pages to try and figure out what on earth a "chooser" was. Your chooser might help you decide what to wear... I had to laugh when I discovered it, because quite simply, it's that little part of us that helps us make all of our decisions. Your chooser also gets to choose whether or not to do something he doesn't feel like doing. The book uses cute little puffs of fluff that float above the characters like cotton-ball balloons to illustrate our God-given gift of free will. I like how the text doesn't shy away from conflict and presents an honest look at some of the challenges a young child might face. I don't know about your child's chooser, but Gv's often collides with others! Besides containing absolutely adorable illustrations, this book's fun rhyming text does an excellent job of getting the message across: that the choices we make play a big part in forming who we become. Gv's chooser is also great at reconciliation, as well. Even the youngest child has choices to make: like whether to be obedient or disobedient, to share or be selfish, to have a good attitude or not, and more. Author John Ortberg addresses this ability to choose by saying that every child is given a "magnificent chooser" by God to help them make the right choices every day. This is an important lesson for kids to learn, and one that could be rather difficult to clarify for little ones, if not for the cute little "choosers" described in this book. You can also choose to wait to decide, sometimes. The pages appealed to Gv and she enjoyed every one we read. I do think that this will be a book she can continue to grow into, as so much of the morality of the text just flew over her head at this point. Even though I think very young children will definitely enjoy hearing this little story, I believe its appeal extends far into the elementary school years, when comprehension skills develop further. So go ahead and help your youngster further develop his or her skills. Pick up a copy of Your Magnificent Chooser and start laying the foundation for good choices with your child.
