A fun Matariki (Māori New Year) art and craft activity that has plenty of templates for you to select from to suit the level of your students. Make a decorative kite to hang on your classroom wall when learning about traditional Māori kites and their significance during Matariki. THE 'WINGS' Select one of the two paper weaving templates or use one of the three plain templates if you are looking for something a little more simple. Colour using dye. THE 'BODY' There are a few different options here to choose from: completely blank blank with facial features already drawn 4 partially patterned templates - draw some patterns 4 fully patterned templates - colour only This template has a side strip that is folded over and glued to give it a nice edge. Use a blank ball point pen or a fine sharpie to draw patterns and then colour using coloured pencils. INSTRUCTIONS Comprehensive instructions (with photos) are included for the paper weaving. Simple enough for your students to follow along independently. Designed on A4 size paper. Made using regular printer paper (you don't need cardboard). Each kite requires 2 sheets of A4 paper (one for the body and one for the wings).
