Anterior ankle impingement is the most common cause of pain in the front of the ankle joint. Often this ankle impingement is due to excess bone formations at the front of the ankle joint. These ankle bone spurs can be a result of frequent forceful ankle dorsiflexion from activities such as soccer or dancing. Frequent ankle sprains or early ankle arthritis can also lead to bone spur formation. Initial treatment of anterior ankle impingement focuses on stretching, the use of a slight heel lift, over-the-counter medications, and possible injections.
