This is a very ancient excavation which has only been uncovered in the last 12 years. It was found in the region of Tel Dan, and everything you see is original, with exception of the canopy and the wood reinforcement for the entryway. Prior to being settled by the tribe of Dan, this region was already a mighty city named Laish. It was during this time that the Abraham and his men pursued the northern kings who had captured his nephew Lot as far as Dan (according to Genesis 14:14). The reason this gate is called "Abraham's Gate" is because Abraham almost certainly would have had to pass through this gate in his pursuit.
