Daniel Day-Lewis is well-known for his method acting and often chooses to remain in character for long periods while shooting his movies. This allows him to react and think as his character would while on set. In Lincoln, the historical biopic about the former US President Abraham Lincoln, Day-Lewis allegedly refused to break character and demanded the director, Steven Spielberg, always refer to him as “Mr. President.” When off set, Day-Lewis would apparently refuse to use any words Lincoln himself wouldn’t have and even refused to speak to anyone British.
