The description card reads, "Crazy Quilt 1883-1893 Silk, cotton, wool, and linen, pieced and embroidered with silk and cotton threads Crazy quilts, which emerged after 1850, were usually composed of small, irregular-shaped fragments of silk, wool, and other fragments pieced together. The seams were then embroidered using a variety of stitches. They acquired the name “crazy quilts” because of the strong colors and busy, confusing nature of their designs, typical of Victorian taste."

Good morning! It is absolutely beautiful here. I hope it is where you are, too. In fact it has been for the last two days.... love it... need it! I think it's speeding up my healing process. So today, I want to show you what was exchanged in the Extraordinary Embroidery Sampler Swap for Silver Bella. Here is what I created for my sweet, sweet partner Virginia. (she doesn't have a blog, but I think she should! wink, wink, nudge, nudge) The photo isn't so great. It was really hard to get a decent picture of it, all in focus, because it turned out so dimensional. And, well honestly, I should have changed lenses... I'm so lazy. We filled out questionnaires about what colors, images, styles, etc. we prefer, at the beginning of the swap. I thought long and hard about this one before starting it, but then all of a sudden, one morning, it all just came together for me and I was able to really get started on it. I like how it turned out, but I did have to stop myself, at the end there, from adding too much and making the whole thing an overkill. It's pretty busy as is. Now for the beautiful piece Virginia made for me! I love it! I have hung it up on a frame that the Farmboy chicken wired for me a long time ago... the flowers in the top corner were already on the frame... not a part of the sampler, but they look so pretty with it. Don't they? I really like how she cut a heart out of a piece of fabric and then used the negative piece to put onto the sampler... I think that's brilliant! The lace, buttons, the little bird, the 3D elements... all of it is just wonderful! Oh! And the colors are perfect! Here it is a bit closer. I tried to get some good close ups of it, but... haha... you should have see it. The farmboy had already gone to work and the boys were still in bed sleeping and there I was, precariously standing on the couch clutching my belly pillow to my tummy and trying to take pictures of it this morning. And I had to do it right then, because it's the best light of the day in that room. I'm sure it was quite the sight! And quite typical of me... I hope the Farmboy doesn't read this post, or I'll be receiving a lecture later. Anywho, isn't it lovely?! I really enjoy stitching, but I have such a hard time getting started. You know, figuring out what to stitch. I think my brain is just too box in most times. And my stitching is still a little crude, I think. But I know that will improve with practice. This book has been a great help... so glad I purchased it. And I absolutely cannot wait for her new embroidery book to hit the shelves! Alright, I'll stop rambling on now. I hope you have a beautiful, beautiful day!

I've taken a lot of pictures of vintage Crazy Quilts, but not very many modern day interpretations. I was especially happy to see 2 contemporary CQ versions at the Arizona Quilters Guild show. All Creatures Large and Small by Gerlinde Hruzek won First Place in the "Other" category. This artist used so many mediums in the making of her quilt: Needlepoint, embroidery, applique, crochet and ribbon work to name a few. The far away picture just does not give justice to how wonderful this quilt really is. The close up shots give a much better visual. Look at the imagination and variety! Someday I would really like to make a Crazy Quilt. (Maybe it's because I'm a little crazy?) These pictures bring wonderful inspiration. I could have stared for hours to visually absorb all there was to see. It almost felt a little bit like an I-Spy quilt. Do you spy 3 cats? Or a fish? Imagination made and quilted by Sheila Groman Sheila wrote "Imagination is a fanciful Crazy Quilt created with applique, standard and silk embroidery, ribbon, lace, heirloom gloves, needlepoint, crewel, beads, cross-stitch, and tatting." Whew! Yes, I'd say Imagination is a perfect title.
Made this one in the spring and then as I often find myself doing, added onto it later.
Friday was the day I went with a friend to the knitting and stitching show at Alexandra Palace. Just like last year, the beautiful creations of Mandy Pattullo were really the only works I wanted to photograph. Mandy was there with her husband, she is such a lovely lady and very modest about her work. Her own photos of the stand at the show can be found on her blog thread and thrift We went around separately, then met up for lunch half way through and discovered we'd both bought one of her pretty hand made textile cards. My intention of not spending too much time in the first hall failed as there were so many interesting things to see. Which was probably a good thing as by the time I got around to the big hall four hours later where you could buy all the materials, I was practically on my knees. There was an exhibition of amazingly intricate large art works by a Canadian lady (whose name I wrote down but can't find) and it was beginning to get a bit 'The Twilight Zone' when we met up for a cup of tea and found we would have both liked to have owned the same piece... not at £3000 though! I thought this collage of paper and fabric was especially pretty. Neither of us was able to finish looking around the big hall, in fact we only managed about a quarter of it, but I came away with a couple of sensible things like a new cutting board, some Christmas presents and a few small pieces of fabric and lace. The Liberty fabric was from Alice Caroline also the patchwork cushion kit, which I thought would make a lovely present. The small print fabric was from The African Fabric Shop the lace from namolio On the free shuttle bus back to the station after, the noise on top of the bus was so loud you could hardly hear yourself speak, it was like a group of exited children after a school trip, people were knitting, crocheting and showing each other the things they'd bought.
