The Magic of Crazy Quilting

I've taken a lot of pictures of vintage Crazy Quilts, but not very many modern day interpretations. I was especially happy to see 2 contemporary CQ versions at the Arizona Quilters Guild show. All Creatures Large and Small by Gerlinde Hruzek won First Place in the "Other" category. This artist used so many mediums in the making of her quilt: Needlepoint, embroidery, applique, crochet and ribbon work to name a few. The far away picture just does not give justice to how wonderful this quilt really is. The close up shots give a much better visual. Look at the imagination and variety! Someday I would really like to make a Crazy Quilt. (Maybe it's because I'm a little crazy?) These pictures bring wonderful inspiration. I could have stared for hours to visually absorb all there was to see. It almost felt a little bit like an I-Spy quilt. Do you spy 3 cats? Or a fish? Imagination made and quilted by Sheila Groman Sheila wrote "Imagination is a fanciful Crazy Quilt created with applique, standard and silk embroidery, ribbon, lace, heirloom gloves, needlepoint, crewel, beads, cross-stitch, and tatting." Whew! Yes, I'd say Imagination is a perfect title.

I am very happy with with this finished block... I was going for a delicate and lacy look.. There was so much that was lovely on this block that I just couldn't let it languish in the drawer... With one exception I pretty much followed my original plan. I dyed a lacy butterfly to echo the color of the lace on the seam and also added a light floral background similar to the work on the upper part of the block Then I added some cream flowers to the upper right patch to add a little light to that corner... In the upper center I beaded two lace dragonflies and because that patch is framed on all sides by elaborate seams, I did little else. The one change I did that I hadn't planned on was the seam (1.) by the butterfly.. for two reasons. There was the lovely seam (3.) and I wanted some of that white somewhere else on the block. That seam (1.) had bright yellow and royal blue beads which weren't in harmony with the block as a whole. New seam is 2. So all in all, just a few minor changes that made me at ease with this block. There was never an issue with the quality of the stitching. It was more the color choices which has prompted me to write the series on color and RRs on Block Talk with Gerry. I have several pieces to back and bind so will do them all at once. Here is the before and after..

I got tired of making the same block by this month, so I began with the wedge shaped blocks that will go between each of the square blocks to create the tree skirt. I will have several of these to make also and it will be nice to switch back and forth between the shapes. I chose to use all pinks in these blocks so they will become "background" and allow the squares around the outer edge be the star!

Pat Winter's wonderful magazine, Crazy Quilt Gatherings has recently come out with the summer issue and I am absolutely thrilled to have several of my crazy quilted eyeglass cases published in the company of many gorgeous creations of crazy quilters I admire. As always, Pat has done a marvelous job gathering delightful eye candy along with interesting articles, tutorials and techniques that any crazy quilter would love. And, as you can see in this photo I took of my copy of the magazine, I have just finished a new eyeglass case, for a lady whose favorite color is brown. Here is my eleventh hexagon block which is based upon an image of a bunch of Poppies, Daisies and little mauve flowers. This block was a challenge in that it only had five colours - orange, green, mauve, yellow and dark brown (plus a few white daisy petals). The purple sequin flowers are paler than they appear in the photo - blame the scanner again.......

On this block I made the top left and a button-bead trail on the center-right. Ingeborg made the fabric background, then Hideko, Maureen, Lorenza and Emiko worked the embroideries before it came to my turn. Sur ce bloc, j'ai fait la partie en haut à gauche et une gerbe de boutons et perles au centre-droite. Ingeborg a monté le bloc puis Hideko, Maureen, Lorenza et Emiko ont fait les broderies avant que se soit mon tour.

Emiko likes roses and subtle colours, so that's what I made for her and hope she'll like it.

One of the crazy quilt lists I belong to has had a small discussion on black on black crazy quilts. I have been working on one for awhile, I think a couple of years now. It turned into a class for my students and in August we will be done with it! It consists of four 16 inch blocks and is surrounded by a 5 inch crazy quilt border. ( If you click on the picture you can enlarge it to see more of the detail!) I found this crazy quilt to be a bit of a challenge because I am a perfectionist and like all my stitches to be perfect! Many of you know that I LOVE to use templates of any kind to help me, so marking it was a challenge but I figured it out. I have really enjoyed doing this quilt and of course, it is no surprise that I did all my stitches in various colors of pink. It would also be no surprise that I did a Pink Bunny on it! Over the last two or three days I have been working on blocks 7 and 8 and also stitching the first seven blocks into a 'flower'. I will take a photo of that later but for now, here is the butterfly block 7 and the Little Mermaid block 8 which is one of my favourites so far. The outside binding of this one is a very pale shell pink - I tried a dull turquoise first, then a brighter pink but in the end, I think this colour shows up the delicate mermaid colours best. This block was a bit of a challenge mainly because the image was not very defined. It is of a bunch of Dog-roses with a brightly coloured butterfly hovering over the top. The butterfly was a tricky colour combination to match. The Salvation Army Thrift Shop came to the rescue once again with another pair of Butterfly earrings for $2.99. This is one of my very favourite blocks because of the delicate colours in the mermaid silkie. I love this print so I made the block "under-the-sea" colours and designs without actually being totally UTS. The shell sequins are not really that bright pink, they are pale, shell pink iridescent tones which the scanner has made pink and yellow.......
