Gionathan de Pas & Donato D’Urbino & Paolo Lomazzi for Ampaglas, pair of Shaula lounge chairs, ABS plastic, expanded polyurethane, fabric, Italy, 1970s Gionathan de Pas & Donato D’Urbino & Paolo Lomazzi, the notorious Italian designer trio, introduced these quirky armchairs which are produced by Ampaglas in the seventies. The design adheres to a rather unconventional shape typical for that period with its round, bulky shapes and disproportioned dimensions. The foundation is constructed from ABS in a dark brown color, a durable plastic frequently used in furniture design of this period. Each chair is accompanied with a padded cushion with a single unbroken form in the color green. These chairs are made to reach an ultimate level of comfort as can clearly be recognized in the design. This design aesthetic not only reflects the new production technology of the time, but also captures the redefinition of mobility in the 1960s-70s, which was driven by the desire for a playful and relaxed environment. Please note that the frames contain scratches and wear. The cushions are discolored and worn. Reupholstery and restoration is possible before shipping by our experienced craftsman and -women in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Burnham is a Windsor chair named after the neighboring village of High Wycome in Buckinghamshire, where the Windsor chair originated. The chair uses traditional Windsor chair-making techniques in order to further the story, of the evolution of the English Windsor chair. The contrast of the black walnut seat on this otherwise ash chair attractively highlights the wedge tenon detail where the leg intersects with the top of the seat. Designed by Matthew Hilton for his eponymous brand, and manufactured by De La Espada craftsmen.

While designing the Up-lift armchair and sofa, our concept was to transform them into a bed with a single action. This action gives the impression of an elegantly orchestrated and rhythmical movement. By pulling the backrest forward, the side ends of circular armrests lean on the floor and serve as the eccentric rotation point around which the sofa easily opens into a functional bed. The attractive and contemporary form of the accentuated shape becomes pragmatically justified in almost surprising transformation and interaction with the user. The idea is original and unprecedented; this often tiresome action of unfolding an armchair or a sofa has been turned into a game that delights with its ingenuity. Such a solution rules out complicated mechanisms and constructions, at the same time maintaining a high level of comfortable sitting and lying. A very rare typology of an unfolding armchair is available with one and a half or double seats.

The configuration of this armchair has anatomical characteristics and unmistakable anthropomorphous references. The chair is a metaphor of a large comfortable womb and recalls ancient statues of fertility goddesses. However, it has something extra: a spherical ottoman tied to the armchair. Therefore, the image of comfort and convenience is combined with a more figurative image of a woman with a ball and chain on her foot. Gaetano Pesce explains the project as follows: "At that time, I was telling a personal story about my concept of women: I believe that women have always been unwilling prisoners of themselves. This is why I decided to give this armchair the shape of a woman with a ball and chain, a traditional image of a prisoner." Over the years, the UP5_6 armchair has become an international icon with different names, from "Big Mama" to "Blow Up". It is still a very popular item.
