Again I tried the eco prints on silk fabric. I bought from florist the fresh eucalyptus cinerea leaves and got the free rose leaves. 1. Fresh eucalyptus cinerea leaves bought 2. Laid on the silk fabric with eucalyptus leaves, rose leaves and a few windfall of other unknown breed of eucalyptus (the bottom narrow ones), covered with another piece so to make two pieces in one-go 3. Bundled and steamed in rice cooker for 45-min and stayed overnight 4. Unbundled after 2 days Comparison of before and after Eucalyptus leaves prints are bold and bright red while rose leaves are green. Dried buds/cups prints of the eucalyptus Two pieces made in one go. Both are bold and sharp. This is experiment on silk fabric. What to do with them? For the balcony door curtain? Mogi loves the curtains dancing in the breeze. Or use it as a scarf? Is this style good? It's hot in Hong Kong. Well, a silk scarf is fine when we're in the air-con. office. Linking with Threadingmyway - Scarves Linking with Creative Princess

This is the new plants I found recently and impressed with the outcome. Really into it and can't help doing more and more..... With the bundle opened for table setting I'm quite pleased with the recent work. This is how I came across such plants...... Last week I passed by a house with lots of flowers and chatted with the owner Ms F. She's so nice to let me into her garden to view her organic produces and beautiful flowers. I spied the bright yellow flowers, family of Tagetes tenuifolia. I told her that I'm doing research with plants for natural prints. She's so nice to let me pick as much as I like and gave me some others plants as well aloe vera and lantern peppers. With handful ediable and printable stuff home can't wait to do the experiments. Here's the first..... Composition of plants on fabric........ I was expecting prints with yellow flowers and green leaves. But.... outcome was all yellowish even the leaves. This is mirror prints on silk and viscose both with alum and iron mordant respectively. Not too bad as it yells pigments of bold prints. For the following experiments I decided to do different mordants of alum, iron and tannin on silk, linen and viscose for the testing. Leaves and petals prints on viscose with iron mordant are bold. Background of grey is effect of iron and tannin. Yellow leaves and flowers is effect of alum mordant silk I also used some of my home plants such as geranium on iron mordant viscose. It's bold grey I like. Ferns and bauhinia are not good prints but no harm for the combination of shades and shapes on viscose. After the many testings I tended to keep clear background with simple alum and iron mordants - my basic motto. Lots of panels made of the same plant ! I've to ask myself what to do with them. Just wrap with Mogi in the late spring days? I love the flowers and the leaves so much. Have to dig out the proper name of the plants. Here are the images how they look like before printing. The tiny red flowers prints purple only with iron mordant. The Artemisia vulgaris (crown daisy唐蒿) prints nice yellow. Layout of "before & after". Mirror prints of iron mordant viscose and alum mordant silk. Onion skins are never wrong on natural printing. Assorted ferns and flowers with iron and tannin mordant to make background grey. I love this part the most - "less is more" - clean and clear. "Behave Mogi ! " He wanted to grasp a piece of the buckwheat bread I made. My healthy breakfast, "bird in the nest" with green pepper from Ms F, slices of avocado and brewed coffee.....what's more? followed by dessert of aloe vera in honey with ginger and white fungus. Thought to do more about this prints but first to make use of the panels This is part of the outfit just made Will show more after shots. Stay tuned for the details. Just to close it.... but the brat on my lap. He's so attached yet a good companion anyway.

Last few days I was busy in teaching a special student natural printing. She's a wonderful artistic lecturer and already an expert in natural dyeing. Miss Lai from Taiwan, she found me from internet and asked about workshop of natural printing of my recent works. I said I learned from Irit Dulman the techniques and not quite properly to teach her. She said she has asked Irit before and Irit has no plan to travel to Taiwan and referred her to contact me. Then I replied Miss Lai I can teach what I am doing in my way, that is steps and ingredients are a bit modified. So we started the one-on-one intensive teaching. It's a cool morning. I have everything ready for my student flying in. Mogi is a brat always wants to know what we're doing. While I was explaining what fabric materials we are going to use, he jumped on the table. First day we do basic and simple mordant of alum and iron for plants. Fabrics are wool and silk. Miss Lai has an artistic vision and the placement is simple . This is wool flannel. Four species of eucalyptus are used for the different shapes and shades. Here comes the result Sounds she is happy with it. This is what we have done on the first day of the basic prints Batch of first day's works. She's happy and I am pleased. A short video of day one. Day 2 we do indigo dye and prints. This is what she wanted to leant and the outcome is as expected. Yes, it's a good day with sunshine. Mogi appreciates it. Works of day 2 completed. Batch of fabrics of different outcome. A short video of day 2. Then day 3 we do mainly with cellulose fabrics. As well indigo and cochinael dyeing. Flower prints and discharge of oxalis Batch of day 3 creation Video of day 3. I'm happy to teach a student who has wealth of natural dyeing experience. Miss Lai knows well the colors mixtures and I get inspired from her too.
Botanical imprints from workshop just made. It's a planned workshop since Feb but postponed a few times due to Covid19. We've just made it with a bunch of enthusiastic participants from NGOs. Our workshop was held in a cultural heritage ambiance. Alley leading to the studio..... ........greeting by "little white". How I love cats ! A glimse of the workshop. It's a 1.5 days botanical imprints workshop with mordant and printing skills. First started by introducing my sample prints of rayon. Then a pretty participant to show the silk jersey sample with indigo dyes and botanical printing. We're lucky to have a well organiser Ming, who is familiar with the neigbourhood and knows well the villagers (Lung Yeuk Tau 龍躍頭). A private garden well maintained by owner Mr Lee next to the studio is amazing with all sorts of printable plants. The couple are so nice to show us around and encouraged us to pick any sorts of plants and flowers. With a handful plants from the garden and bunch of flowers from florist we started the making...... Rayon mordanted overnight. Layout of plants Concentrated working on... Will that dill fragrance remind your taste bud? After layout then bundling. Team work to tie it more tightly. After 1.5 hours heating the outcome hanging dry and the images speak themselves...... Bright yellow onion skin Discharge of nandina (南天竺) Ferns, oxalis, nandina, flowers..... Eucalyptus leaf of two sides printout Nandina and euc cinerea Those plants have no pigments as resist prints Big leaf of macaranga tanarius (血桐) All finished in a fine day and happy to shot in such natural ambiance. I like the ruins of brick houses and such a good theme with our natural botanical printings Thank you so much for the lovely ladies, particularily renowned artist Evelyna Liang for connecting my workshop with Ming who worked hard behind. The villages - Lung Yeuk Tau (five walled villages and six villages 五圍六村) is only 45-min drive from my urban apartment but I have never been before. It's worth for a cultural and heritage visit. After the workshop I grasped the chance strolling around. Sure next time I must explore the villages by bike. I am so in love of the area and the scenery.
