i just picked up the book "japanese quilting piece by piece : 29 stitched projects from yoko saito". i am blown away. yoko saito is a master quilt artist who explores traditional folk themes, but interprets them with a vintage, yet modern feel. some of the projects in the book are a bit daunting, and require a serious dose of patience, as well as major skill with needle and thread. yet, each page is more inspiring than the next, and yoko's color palette especially is so gorgeous: all tonal tea-stained taupes, mushrooms and charcoals. absolutely gorgeous!

Let's start with the Yoko Saito Retrospective. Known as the founder of Taupeism, Yoko Saito started her quilting journey emulating traditional American quilt designs. Ultimately she found her true quilting voice with softer, low-volume colors and meticulous details. The exhibit opens with a country cabin surrounded by spring flowers—real blooming spring flowers that are fresh and fragrant! The show includes incredible quilts, bags, and a home display that demonstrate Yoko’s high design sense and needlework skills. Here is a photo of Yoko Saito today, busy signing books in her shop’s booth on the other side of the Festival floor: The most celebrated quilts at the Festival are the four Grand Prix Winners: FRIENDSHIP AWARD / Treasure Box by Megumi Yokoyama HAND MAKING AWARD: Quilt by Keiko Morihiro JAPAN QUILT GRAND PRIX, SECOND PLACE / Welcome to Martha”s Garden by Masami Ishibashi JAPAN QUILT GRAND PRIX FIRST PLACE / Quilt by Tokiko Yanazawa It has been my good fortune to attend Tokyo Quilt Festival four times. I woke up really early this morning. . . (around 4:30) . . . & couldn't get back to sleep. . . maybe because of the weather report/forcast that temperatures here in Arizona are going to take a big dip (up to 30 degrees!) today. (Yippee!!!). . . & I'm so excited - I guess I just couldn't wait for this actual fall-weather day to begin!. . . (& then again. . . it could be because I have a to-do list about a mile long. . . just for today!) I love fall weather & all that comes with autumn. . . & if you've read my blog for any amount of time. . . you know that I tend to lament a bit when autumn comes around & we're still having temps in the 80's. Maybe with age - I'm beginning to mellow into the acceptance of those kind of temperatures here in Arizona. . . & maybe it's because I've 'wised-up' & for the past few years - have been taking many more day trips up to Mt. Lemmon - only 45 minutes from my house. And, at 9,100 feet. . . you feel like your in Colorado & the aspen & maple trees amidst the pine trees really put on a beautiful autumn show. This past week, my Dad & I were joined by my cousin & his wife & we went up to the top of Mt. Lemmon. (Up to the top means taking the ski lift to the very tippy-top. . . where the views are breathtaking & where it is so blissfully quiet. . . all you hear is the wind in the leaves. We really hit it at a great time. . . & as usual . . . I went nuts taking photos. (with my iPhone . . . still can't believe I forgot my camera!) This is on the path to catch the ski lift. . . These are taken from the lift. . . (the round-y orange tree in the middle is one of my favorites. . .) Towards the top of this photo you can see a peek of couple aspen trees peeking out through the pines. . . these are scattered all over at the top of the mountain & the contrast of the pines & the jolts of yellow aspen are beautiful. . . like autumn's exclamation points. . . After we come back down from the ski lift, a new favorite is to go to the pizza/cookie cabin (in the mountaintop village of Summerhaven). . . where they make the best pizza. . . & huge (8") cookies to order. . . so that they come to your table warm - fresh out of the oven. Yum! (I always do some extra walking in the days before going up - just so I can indulge!) This is the sign that they have hanging - just outside the bathroom. . . (I love it.) . . . & here's me & Dad. I'm loving that we get to share all these trips up to Mt. Lemmon. . . & he's a pretty wonderful "date"! (. . . I sooo need to practice better posture!!!) Hope your week is filled with memory making moments!. . . (now. . . I need to go & find my sweaters!. . . ) :o)

You can find a lot of photos from Tokyo Quilt Festival 2015 here. Wa. Today is the final post about the festival, I will show the photos of the winners in traditional category, but I started with this gorgeous quilt from Wa quilts, the author in the catalogue is in Japanese, again, sorry. Now to the winners in Traditional category. First Prize - "Pieces" - Rieko Hasegawa. Второй Приз - Emiko Kobayashi. Second Prize - Emiko Kobayashi. Третий Приз - Kyo Saito. Third Prize - Kyo Saito. Это был отдельный чей-то стенд, любоваться можно было долго :-) Next photos are from someone's stall-shop, I don't know the name, but it was such a fun to look at all the soft textile toys and creations! Some other quilts that didn't fit to the previous posts. Quilts from the exhibition by the book "Little women". By Masako Wakayama, very beautiful: Квилт Toshiko Kobayashi: Quilt by Toshiko Kobayashi: Квилт Isako Murakami: Quilt by Isako Murakami: Разные квилты. Other quilts on the show. I love this quilt, the applique is gorgeous! Wonderful quilt by Ayako Kawakami, I was honored to meet the master, her friends (or students) introduced me to her when I was making my photos :-) Shizuko Kuroha making a presentation. I will finish my posts with the photos of charity quilts, each block in them is made by the quilter from all different places, great idea and great cause! Thank you all for your patience with all my pictures :-)))) Have a nice day!

Part 1 is here. Part 2 is here. Part 3 is here. *** First, the winner-quilts in Traditional quilts category. I must say that I came to them somewhat in the end of the day, my hands were shaking and I was exhausted, hence the photos are really bad. Anyway, the first place got the quilt by Mihoko Taguchi, name unknown. "Tree of the Paradise"?.. No?.. Yoko Koizumi. Second place - the quilt by Yoko Koizumi. The third place winner should be (on my opinion, from all three quilts) the first. I love the colour, the borders, great quilt! The maker - Chizuru Naito. A couple of quilts that didn't make it to my previous post: "Retro Bouquet" by Minori Ishida: "My Heart" by Taeko Shinozaki Several techniques in one quilt - another example, there is English paper piecing, hexagons, applique, embroidery and trapunto! "My lovely "KOIMARI"" by Keiko Yoshida It's now time to talk about the weather bags!!! I am not sure why, but the winner bags did not make it to my camera memory stick - probably they weren't my favorites, or I just missed them. I took photos of what I really liked. Here they are: Фух. If you are not sick of me, I still have more photos :-) "Wa" quilts and Original quilts. This was a huge show...I will come back.
