Art is a truly subjective medium when it comes to appreciation. There are people who like the sublime use of color from artists like Monet or Klimt. Others appreciate the weirdness and surrealism of Dali and Ernst. And still some others go down the route of darkness, where pain and beauty mix into something grotesque […]

There's nothing wrong with a flattering selfie, but what about when a self-portrait goes more than skin-deep? "Self Reflection," a new exhibition at Untitled Space in New York, gathers women artists' takes on not just their own likenesses, but also themes like gender, censorship, and sexuality. "Historically, women have used self-portraiture to address their own identity in relationship to contemporary society and social constructs," explains Indira Cesarine, who curated the exhibition with Coco Dolle. And while the show features some traditional forms — watercolors by the artist-actress Rebecca Dayan, for one, and handwoven tapestries by the Brooklyn artist Erin M. Riley — the attitude, of course, remains decidedly modern. From photos by the threeasFOUR designer Ange to digital paintings by Leah Schrager, take a look, here.

Art about motherhood has been devalued just about as long as the work of raising children has. But starting in the 20th century, we can find many examples of artworks that use the images or materials of motherhood to great effect.

It is wrong, in my view, to place aesthetic constraints on artistic expression, whether that is painting, sculpture or any other artistic endeavor. What permits one to make good art is, in part, the freedom to explore, and when necessary, push the boundaries of the media one is working with. Clement
Mixed-media artist Angelika Arendt spends her time merging her two preferred creative interests: textile design and fine art. Working in sculpture and drawing out of her Berlin studio, Arendt creates organic forms that seem to grow through each tactile form and line. Arendt studied Textile Design at Reutlingen University, graduating from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe where she received the title of a master-class student. In the following interview, we discussed how she received the esteemed 2014 Berlin Hyp Prize, platforms for female artists, her latest works, and her current exhibition at Haus am Lützowplatz in Berlin.
By the time he was out of primary school, Augustin Lesage was sent to work deep in the coal mines of France, which to be fair, would probably be enough to render anyone mad. In 1911, when he was 35 years-old, Lesage claimed he heard a voice speak to him in the darkness of the mine and tell him, "One

At the compellingly odd blog Under the Sun, we stumbled on an gorgious interior with messily painted, canvas like walls in what appeared to be an Italian Villa. We follwed the trail to discover it was from an article Vogue magazine ran in 1966, about artist Cy Twombly's villa in Rome. The photographs were by fashion photographer Horst. The walls we thought so beautifully, haphazardly painted, were really Twombly's canvasses. He'd tack them right onto the wall —no wooden stretchers — and paint. Inspired. As is the combination of studio and normally-uptight classical chairs. Though we could never paint like
