So I fell hard for this economy block along. The crush was so great it developed into a kingsize. An 81 block kingsize. My scrap stash dictated the colourway. There are some god awful really unusual combinations here, as I chose fabrics that contrasted in the main. I still need to settle on the layout the layout above although looks good on screen but in person it was too hectic so I have sewn another 9 with muted contrasts, to give the eye a rest from the stripes. Wish me luck with the block swapping, I'm not sure why I'm in such a hurry I don't have the money for wadding not with having a new boiler fitted this week... no but at least I am economising. I am thinking of hand quilting diagonal lines in black... what do you think?

My brother finally got this in the mail last week. He lives up in Portland, Maine and suffers through icy, long, cold winters that scream for quilts and beg for spring. Aside from Robert Redford being incredibly good looking and an accomplished actor, he also has a little catalog called Sundance. It was here that I found my inspiration vis-a-vis Denyse Schmidt, whose work is featured in the catalog. I paid little attention to color except when it came to distribution of red. I think it came out well. There are both new and vintage fabrics incorporated in this quilt. I also made sure to use a few bits of Denyse Schmidt's fabric for good measure. The quilt in the catalog is hand-quilted. I love my brother but......... you've got to be kidding. ~happy sewing!

This quilt-inspired block printing tutorial is a creative way to add character to fabric. Together we will carve a block and stamp!
I was asked if I'd like to participate in the Benartex online magazine "Modern By The Yard' in a feature called 'Modern With A Twist'. What does that mean?! Three designers are asked to put a modern take on a traditional block and feature it using one of their current fabric lines. I was up for the challenge and knew it would be a lot of fun! MODERN BY THE YARD Our mission: Modernize Flying Geese. My all time favorite block has to be Flying Geese! Besides being a good all around perfect block, it has unlimited possibilities! From size, shape, traditional or improv, there’s always something new to explore and design! I decided to keep my block simple, yet impactful! There is plenty of negative space, open space with the background, and depending on how you place your blocks the design changes giving you many different options. KEEPING PACE I choose Gloaming by Shelley Cavanna mostly because of the colors. The turquoise, lime and mulberry are a beautiful combination! The geometric, tone on tone and floral prints seemed like the perfect choice for a perfect block…Flying Geese! I played with this block for hours! Layouts, fabrics, more layouts! It certainly has potential to make a few pretty cool quilts! I don't know about you, but this layout has a 'wave illusion' to it! I guess it could be just me, but I think not! I'm so glad I went with these colors! I love the combination and feel they were perfect for this block! Of course, what would a block with potential be without sharing some variations?! EQ8 makes it so easy to switch fabrics! This is the same layout, but I used 'Cherry Twist' from Benartex. I was feeling the red, black, grey and white! These two are symmetrical, but both look so different. What would an idea of mine be without testing it using solids? The blocks are randomly placed with some flipped. A variation of the block. This is a more scrappy version using Denyse Schmidt 'Washington Depot'. It could be a lot of fabrics from one collection or better yet, a lot of different scraps from your very own stash! I will be making this block into a quilt...it will happen...after I get some other projects off my plate! You may be wondering how this block is a 'modern' version of Flying Geese. What I will say is this...because the Flying Geese block is typically a rectangle and one actual 'goose', I opted to add many geese to create one square block. Hopefully the layout of the block is a modern interpretation! I know its hard to believe because I only just told you how I was quilting my economy block quilt, but I have finished hand quilting already. My first idea for binding was a solid red.. however I remembered this fabric my Mum gave me. Its a dark burgundy which I think could actually work, with the interests of using what I already have I shouldn't hesitate should I? I think red may actually be to brash for this already busy quilt. Plus I don't have any red so I could getting binding today couldn't I?? ps. I have mentioned before, I am now on instagram. If you don't have the ability to join in you can still see my feed here there are lots of progress pics go take a look x
I took some time to make myself a summer dress using an old favorite pattern. I need some more new clothes and I HATE to shop. While looking for something I came across 6 leftover squares and decided to make bear claw blocks with them. I have had some Thangle papers for some time so I used them to make HSTs. They are convenient because these use 2 ½” strips to make 2” finished HSTs. With the light fabric next to the paper, they easily press toward the dark and finish. I forgot that each square creates 2 finished HST squares so I ended up with twice what I needed for the 6 blocks and have enough for 12 blocks. I put that away for another day. My Leader-Ender project has been squares of light and dark basic colors. I decided I had enough twos and started putting them together for rows of 4. I could not stop there so put together 16 patch blocks. I have 15 finished and 3 more half done. My original idea was to make a “16 patches and pinwheels” quilt I have seen several places. This is my EQ plan for what it might look like. I also played with another option. I have put my 16 patch blocks on hold for now. I have too many other projects that need attention. I am collecting boxes to pack up my kitchen for remodeling. That will be a job but I’m looking forward to a beautiful new kitchen.

A couple of nights ago, I woke up in the middle of the night, and, in that semi slumber state when I was letting my mind wander while trying to go back to sleep, I thought of a solution to a puzzle…
