Ahn-yong! Hello, and welcome to another art around the world post. This isn't technically art but it is a fun game you can play with your kids. What is Ddakji you ask? Ddakji, sometimes referred to as ttakji, is a traditional Korean game played using folded paper disks. All you need to play are the folded origami ddakji disks. What you will need: two sheets of square origami paper for each disk you want to make (we used regular astrobright paper). The size of the paper does not matter as long as they are square. You can use any kind of paper you have, to make it square here is a quick video showing you how. He suggests licking the paper to cut it but I used scissors ;). Folding the paper can be a good introduction to basic origami and can help with practicing those fine motor skills. I watched a couple of videos before hand so that I could help the boys fold their disks. I'll link a video at the end of this post for those who are visual learners. Both boys were able to fold their disks with very little assistance from me. How to play the game: Choose a throwing player (we went with the youngest goes first rule but you can decide however you would like). The other player places his/her disk on the table. The throwing player tries to throw his disk so that it makes the other players disk flip over. If he is successful he gets to keep the disk. We made several disks so that we could play the game much longer. This sounds simple but it is actually a lot harder than it looks. I had to warn my kids ahead of time that it takes practice to flip the disks over, and that it is okay if they aren't able to. We were never successful in flipping the disks over but they enjoyed playing never the less. Here is a video of the boys playing the game. Sorry I didn't realize my finger was in the video part of the way :). Here is a video on the folding instructions. I hope you try this fun game with your kids :). Have you entered my giveaway for 4 Christmas DVDs yet? It is ending soon!! This month we are exploring Cuba with Around the World in 12 Dishes. I was rather excited to learn more about Cuba since it is such a mysterious country to me. With all the trade and travel restrictions it seems like an unknown place. We have explored Cuba with books, stories, music, crafts and food from home. To learn more about Cuba and see more resources check out my introduction post at the Around the World in 12 Dishes blog. We had also learned a bit about Cuba during the Hispanic Heritage Month when we read about Celia Cruz, a Cuban-American salsa singer. Celia Cruz By Lionel Decoster (Own work) [GFDL or CC-BY-SA-3.0-2.5-2.0-1.0], via Wikimedia Commons For our exploration we made some Cuban Cookies or Torticas. I saw a recipe for these cookies in two different books, so I thought I would try them. The recipe we used came from Cooking the Cuban Way by Alison Behnke and Victor Manuel Valens. The cookies are a sugar cookie flavored with lime. All three of us loved them!! Cuban Cookies from Cooking the Cuban Way 1 stick of butter at room temperature 1 cup of sugar 2 egg yolks 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice 1/2 teaspoon lime zest (grated lime peel) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder powdered sugar for sprinkling 1) In the mixer cream butter and sugar together. (You can use a wooden spoon if the butter is soft enough.) 2) Add egg yolks, lime juice and zest and vanilla. Blend thoroughly. (We zested the lime and squeezed the juice before we began.) 3) In a separate bowl mix the flour, salt and baking powder together. Then add it to the butter mixture and mix well (until it forms a dough). Wrap in wax paper and refrigerate for an hour. 4) Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Use your fingers to shape the dough into walnut size balls and place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until very lightly browned. Allow cookies to sit on baking sheet for 5 more minutes out of the oven. Remove from baking sheet and sprinkle with powdered sugar. I put our powdered sugar in a salt shaker so Hazel could easily sprinkle them. This recipe made about 24 cookies. I also tried a version of a Cuban Avocado Salad for our early Thanksgiving dinner. However my mother and I added more than just the lettuce, avocado and red onion to our salad and made it more like a traditional salad. We added tomatoes and black olives. It was delicious. Sorry I didn't take any pictures of it. We also made some Cuban yarn dolls. We found the instructions in Traditional Crafts from the Caribbean by Florence Temko. They were very easy to make since the first part was just wrapping the yarn around cardboard. Then tying off sections. There were no instructions for clothes so we made some out of felt and glued them the best we could. Hazel is very happy with them. That is our exploration of Cuba. Now it is time for the Around the World Blog Hop. Around the World in 12 Dishes is hosted by these lovely blogs: Adventures In Mommydom, Afterschool for Smarty Pants, All Done Monkey, Crafty Moms Share, Glittering Muffins, Kid World Citizen, Mermaids' Makings, The Mommy Talks and The Usual Mayhem I hope you will take the time to check them all out and check out everyone's great explorations of Cuba. If you have a Cuban dish or craft or lesson, please share it here as well!! As part of our Rugby World Cup Inquiry Unit we studied France. The children were fascinated to discover that people eat frog legs in France. This inspired shared reading (well.... singing) of frog poetry, a shared book about the life-cycle of a frog, and and some fantastic frog headbands with incredibly long tongues that we created as part of our French Day celebrations. We *heart* headbands in Room 1. This frog headband is a super simple paper-craft activity. You need: sellotape, stapler, scissors, a long strip of paper for the headband, a frog picture, and a smaller strip of red or pink paper for the tongue. I found a picture of a frog from the internet. I photocopied it onto coloured card, but you could just colour it in. Crayon and dye would look great too. Cut out the frog (practicing those very important cutting skills), and then cut one end of the frog's tongue so the end is curved like a real tongue. Sellotape the tongue onto the frog's mouth so that it sticks up, don't worry it will curve down to hang over the front of the frog. Measure the headband by placing it around the child's head, then carefully take it off and staple it. I place the stapler so that the flat part of the staple is against the child's hair (on the inside of the headband). That way it won't get caught on any hair. Staple the frog onto the headband. Voila! A French Frog Headband! You can also curl the frog's tongue for extra real-life frogginess. Most of the 5 year olds I worked with were able to do this activity independently, with only some help needed for stapling and measuring the headband. Here are some of the other ideas we used in our teaching syndicate for amazing French themed art and craft for our French Day celebrations: A rooster hat. Paper plate snails. Sunflower collage. A popsicle stick Eiffel Tower. And French Flag/Eiffel Tower crayon and dye art. Some facts about France that we learned: The rooster the the French national bird. The French flag is blue, white, and red, it is known as the French Tricolour. They eat snails and frogs legs in France. Paris is the capital city. The Eiffel Tower is in Paris. They love to play rugby in France.
