Ready to create learning stations? They require a purposeful and strategic design in order for the experience to be meaningful. Start here!
Each Monday we collaborate with our building's new and Dual Language staff members for a professional development session based on what they highlight as their needs and/or desires for learning! This week we focused on Daily 5 ideas as all of our staff are currently working hard to get their stations and guided reading up and running! The teachers who attending the session came up with a variety of wonderful ideas and activities that could potentially be used throughout the year in these work stations. I thought some of you may enjoy taking a gander at what they came up with as well! Just a little background... we utilized a strategy many of you may be familiar with called "Round Robin" to gather ideas during our meeting. The staff were given the anchor charts with only the titles and asked to add any activity ideas they were doing, would like to do, etc. based on the title on their paper. We gave each group 1 minute to brainstorm and write their ideas, and then they were asked to pass the poster to the next group. We continued to do this until all posters had made it to all groups. This is a great strategy that you could use with your students as well to assess their background knowledge and/or learning of concepts. You could even do it at the beginning of the year to see what activities they already know and enjoy doing during Daily 5 if they are familiar with it from the year past! This may give you some insight as to what they may want to do in your classroom as well! Alright now onto the posters...keep in mind these were quickly written by our staff and we discussed them a bit after as well, so not everything may make perfect sense! But feel free to ask questions in the comments if you have any and I would be happy to try my best to answer! After our meeting, I also took some time to type up all of their ideas onto one page for them to hold on to and refer to throughout the year. The past few years I’ve had the opportunity to teach a course entirely through project based learning. Well, a little Honey Boo Boo and a few less brain cells functioning correctly and all is right with the world. I know I probably shouldn't admit that we just watched her, but it is so hard to turn the television even as they burp, pick their noses, and buy pet chickens... Something about watching reality television just makes you realize how much easier your life is than those on the big screen. Oh, the things I admit behind a computer screen. Speaking of which, thanks to all of you for your sweet emails and messages. I didn't mean to play the "woe is me" card. I think it was a combination of being stunned and hit by too much media at once, which I'm taking a break from for a few days. I need to be better at having thick skin :) I'm probably just a little too sensitive sometimes which I'm sure wouldn't surprise my parents, my teammates, or probably anyone that knows me. Here's the good news - I now know who I'm going to be blogging about next week - all of you guys! So, get ready girls! I'm going to do my best to find a favorite item from each of your boards and pin it to mine with a link to your board :) Now, in other news, I have been working the last few days on a new packet. It's a Groundhog Day printable packet. It isn't all the way done, but I thought I'd go ahead and share a sheet of it with you. I'll give you more info hopefully on Tuesday about the whole packet. The entire packet is completely standards based with the standard included. This way, you can have some fun with your kiddos and at the same time get in your requirements. I believe this packet is going to be language arts-based and if I have some time, I'll try to make a math-based packet later, hopefully later being before February :) CLICK HERE to get my freebie. It's a dictionary skills sheet where students have to pick the correct definition. The packet contains 4 of these sheets. I have a hard time finding them, so I decided to create more than one. Hope it will help you guys out! Alright, hope you guys have a great week!

This resource contains six ancient Greece learning stations that students can rotate through in small groups. Each learning station (or center) is designed to give students engaging and exciting learning experiences to practice, enrich, review, and enhance their learning. Students will visit each station with a small group and complete ancient Greece activities. Here’s the fun part! During the learning stations, students will create an accordion book to showcase their learning. They’ll “build” foldable parts of a Parthenon accordion book while they progress through the stations. Then, when they complete all their work, they’ll put together the accordion book to showcase their learning in a fun and interactive way! Working both independently and with their small groups, students will have multiple opportunities to develop their understanding of ancient Greece while they investigate its geography, religion, accomplishments, politics, economics, and society. ABOUT THE LEARNING STATIONS: The ancient Greece learning centers or stations are based on the Common Core elements for Social Studies: Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics/Government, Economy, and Society Station 1: Geography - Students learn about the geography of ancient Greece as they label and color in a map & complete guided notes. Station 2: Religion - At this station students learn about the religion of ancient Greece. First, they’ll read a passage. Then, students will doodle icons for Greek deities. Station 3: Achievements - Students read a series of reading cards to learn about 6 of ancient Greece’s significant achievements. Then, they collect facts to add to a chart. Station 4: Politics - Students will learn about the Greek government in their small groups. Then, they’ll use their knowledge to piece together facts that have been separated. Station 5: Economy - At this station students will learn about the economy of ancient Greece. They’ll answer questions and even design currency for a city-state. Station 6: Society - Students will learn about the class structure in ancient Greece’s civilization. They’ll fill in guided notes and complete a social class chart. All Stations: Vocabulary – Students will travel with a vocabulary tracker to each learning station. They’ll collect critical vocabulary and record the definitions as they work. ABOUT THE INTERACTIVE PARTHENON ACCORDION BOOK Students will easily create a Parthenon accordion book. Each page that they complete during the learning centers will be glued together to create the book. Then, they’ll add a Parthenon cover and end page to make an expandable display of their learning! The accordion books make awesome classroom displays and easily fold to fit inside students’ folders! INCLUDED IN THIS DETAILED RESOURCE: This resource is absolutely turn-key! Everything you need is included! Spring is definitely my favorite time of year to teach Science! There are just so many hands-on concepts that are so interesting to the students. Plants, of course, is always so interesting because they are something the kids can see all around them and they all have some kind of experience with. First up, here are some of our centers we have going on during our study of plants. This first one is the same green mat as the one below, just with different sorting objects. This is our Spring Sensory Tub. So far, it contains flowers, pots, rubber bugs, and bug cards that the students can match with the rubber bugs. This seed matching center is one of my favorite Science centers. Each large card contains an empty seed packet and some seeds. The students find the small card with the same seeds and matches it to the large card. One of the student's favorite activities was going on a nature hunt and then using what they found to create their own nature collages. And of course, no study on plants would be complete without planting our own beans! We planted pinto and lima. (The clear cups make it easy to see how the roots grow!) Want to completely amaze your Kinders?! Just change white carnations into colored carnations with food coloring and water! At the end of our unit on plants, I split the students into five groups and they made posters to present to the class about what they learned. Watching them work together and figure it all out on their own is always my favorite part of group projects. I wrote the title for each group on a piece of paper, but the students did all the planning, writing and drawing on their own. "How to Plant a Seed" "Plant Needs" "What We Know About Plants" "Types of Plants" "Parts of a Plant" Update: I have created a Living & Nonliving Mini Unit to continue our study of living and nonliving things. You can see it on Teachers Pay Teachers, here. Or you can read about it on my newest blog post, here.
