Hagar, the Egyptian handmaiden of Sarah, was the mother of Ishmael, Abraham's first son. When Isaac, Sarah's son, was born, Ishmael mocked his younger brother so that Sarah asked Abraham to banish Ishmael, together with his mother. Abraham provided them with bread and water, and sent them off into the desert of Beersheba. When the water was spent, Hagar put Ishmael under a bush to die, and then she sat some way off, weeping. But an angel appeared and disclosed a well of water near by, so mother and child were both saved. This artwork, by Bottani, depicts the scene of Hagar's and Ishmael's deliverance by the angel.

Abraham: One God, Three Wives, Five Religions is a groundbreaking examination of Abraham, one of the most beloved and significant religious figures in history. Author Frances Worthington researches the three wives/concubines (Sarah, Hagar, and Keturah) of Abraham, and traces their lineage to five different religions - Christianity, Judaism, Islam, the Bábí Faith, and the Bahá'í Faith. Examining the scripture and traditions of these five "Abrahamic" faiths, this complex story also draws heavily from a rich variety of historical sources that provide a fascinating backdrop. #bahai To learn more, go here: http://abraham.bahaibookstore.com/

Fabulous and very French Vintage painting based on the very famous Landscape Hargar and The Angel, created by Claude Lorrain in the 17th century. This is a copy of the original painting created by Claude Lorrain which is housed in the National Gallery in London. It illustrates the Old Testament story of Hagar, setting it in a tranquil landscape bathed in hazy sunlight. Hagar is an Egyptian servant girl who gives birth to Abraham’s child and runs away after quarrelling with Abraham’s childless wife, Sarah. Claude captures Hagar’s suffering and despair: having run out of water in the wilderness, she has left her son, Ishmael, under a bush and is praying for God’s salvation. In the Bible, this scene is set in the desert, but iClaude chose a verdant landscape that resembles the countryside around Rome. According to the story, an angel appears to Hagar and gives her water. However, Claude shows a substantial river in the background. Pointing towards a distant town, the angel encourages Hagar to return to Sarah and Abraham. With his other hand, he points towards her, conveying God’s promise that Ishmael will become a great leader. Medium Oil on canvas mounted on wood. Dimensions; 38.5 cms W x 55 cms H x 2 cms D 15"W x 22 "H x .8"D In good vintage condition, please see photos for details.
