Students learn how to practice drawing quick rectangular shapes and paint warm and cool colors into those shapes using Paul Klee art inspiration and
Paul Klee was an abstract artist who made lots of simple paintings that are fun to imitate. Students can create the look of his “Castle and Sun” painting by tracing geometric cardboard shapes, and the
Kindergarteners created art in the style of Paul Klee. We read "The Cat and the Bird: A Children's Book inspired by Paul Klee" and we looked at the actual painting by Klee titled "The Cat and the Bird." We talked about abstract art (art that doesn't look as real as a photograph) and how some abstract artists like Klee like to use lots of shapes in their artwork. For this project we focused on learning the difference between a line and a shape. Then we moved on to the difference between regular (geometric) and irregular (organic) shapes. On the first day, we drew and sharpied dog or cat faces. Since I'm a real dog lover I couldn't help but give the kids a choice. When I have done this project in the past, I have focused on the painting "Senecio" by Klee but I must admit drawing animals is a little more fun! The next day, we painted using warm colors since Klee focused on the warm colors in his paintings. When we paint with the warm colors, we start with the lightest warm colors and work our way to the darkest colors so that the water doesn't get to dirty for the yellow right away. I try to pick the yellow up early on so that it doesn't get too messy! Students were challenged to avoid painting shapes that were touching (sharing sides) with the same color. Some exceptions had to be made at the end when we ran out of colors. Learning Goals: I can... - Create abstract artwork in the style of Klee - Tell the difference between a regular and irregular shape - Balance colors throughout my artwork - Use good craftsmanship when drawing and painting

Paul Klee with 3rd Grade Today was my last art lesson with my 3rd graders of the school year! :( So crazy! I'm glad it was a fun one!! Read on to see how we made these beautiful Paul Klee inspired castles! I showed them a slideshow of Klee's more Cubist pieces, and as always, asked the kids to use their powers of observation to practice analyzing art. It was the last art lesson I taught them this year, so by now they're getting good at this. They surprise me sometimes with the things they notice - "It's like, abstract, but you can still see buildings some places", "He likes to put bright colors next to more boring ones", "He has a theme of a color and then puts a few other random colors with them, like mostly purple and blue, but then some random yellows". Aw, brilliant! Kids can analyze art, you just have to give them some vocabulary and let them do it. ALL YOU NEED: Orange paper and oil pastels! • To make our Klee Castles, we talked about Geometric vs. Organic shapes. • Then, we talked about what kinds of things we might see on a castle. • Then, on orange paper, kids drew their castles with pencil, using rulers to make straight lines. • Then, they broke their castles up into smaller geometric shapes. • Then, they filled in each shape with a different color of oil pastel. • Finally, all their shapes were outlined with either black or dark blue oil pastel. AREN"T THESE SO AMAZING?! I loved how they turned out :) Have fun!!!

Grade 3 students made these charming chalk pastels cat drawings inspired by the delightful Paul Klee painting "Cat and Bird" (Katze und Vogel). Klee was a Swiss artist who had a wide range of styles throughout his career. One of his main influences, though, was children's art. He was fascinated by their art- the simple lines as well as their innate creativity. You can see this influence in "Cat and Bird" with it's simple lines and cat head composed of simple shapes. I love the cat's large, unwavering, hypnotic eyes. Students first looked at the painting and I asked them why they thought a bird might be on top of this cat's head. I got a few different answers including, "The bird is just resting on his head eating small insects", I guess like a beneficial parasite- cleaning the cat! lol I prompted the 'suggestion' that maybe the cat was thinking/dreaming about the bird (eerm, to eat it?) Perhaps the artist wanted to show what was happening in the cat's mind. So the kids had to think of one 'thing' their cat would be thinking of and include that in their drawing. Paul Klee, "Cat and Bird", 1928, oil & ink on canvas Source Students started off by drawing a simple line drawing of the hat's head and what it was thinking of. I have to reeeaally encourage this age group to draw LARGE- fill the page!! Then outline all the pencil lines with a dark marker, crayon or colored pencil. Once the drawing is outlined, erase any stray pencil lines that are still showing (craftsmanship!!) Now you're left with a lovely crisp, clean drawing. Demo or review how to use chalk pastels. I emphasized soft blending using a finger or a paper towel, using the side of the pastel, mixing colours, and using the same 4-5 colours throughout the whole drawing in order to create harmony and unity. chalk pastels Grade 3 cats- ta da!
