A trip to see the Wizard of Oz at the weekend, and a current museum project of mine which involves puppet-making research, gave me the idea to make a Tin Man marionette. My children were keen to join in - provided we also made a Tin Lady and a Tin Baby. So yesterday we made the whole Tin Family. It took a while, but we are thrilled with how they turned out. The way the puppets move is so funny, and they are full of character - we love them. Here's what we used: 3 x small tin cans (heads) 2 x large tin cans (bodies) 12 x empty tea-light foils (hands and feet) 6 x drinking straws (arms and legs) 3 x 30cm sticks (operating rods) 5m colourful string a selection of stickers and googly eyes (faces) 30cm tin foil (skirt) silver foil sticky tape 15cm diameter circle of silver card (hat) 1 x silver pipe cleaner (hair) Here's what we did: 1. First we selected our tin cans - Tin Baby used just one small can, Tin Lady and Tin Man each had one small can for their head and one large for their body. 2. Using a small and pointy-headed screwdriver (a bradawl would have been even better), I punched a hole in the centre of the top of each can. 3. I made two holes where I wanted the shoulder and hip joints to be on each large can (for Tin Lady and Tin Man) - and for Tin Baby I did this on the small can. I used the screwdriver again but this time someone had to hold the cans steady; it was definitely a two-person job. 4. Then the fun really began - it was time to make our characters: i) my son made Tin Man - with googly eyes and stickers for bushy eyebrows and a moustache on the small can, sticker-stars as buttons and some shiny tape as a belt on the large can ii) my daughter made Tin Lady, with stickers for facial features and a silver pipe-cleaner for hair on the small can, and a tin-foil skirt on the large can. She decorated the shoes (tea-light containers) with some shiny tape iii) I made Tin Baby by adding some facial feature stickers to the small tin 5. When all the decoration was finished we were keen to see these characters come to life. I cut about fifteen hand-to-elbow-length pieces of colourful string in readiness - and then we began the rather fiddly job of threading all their bits together. 6. We threaded the head and bodies together first (using a blunt-ended darning needle) leaving about 20cm of string to attach to the operating rod. We also stuck each head and body together with some shiny tape to make the puppets more robust. 7. We threaded the arm-and-leg strings to each of the joint holes in the cans and then, having punched little holes through the centre of each tea-light container we threaded on the hands and feet. 8. The tea-light hands needed two further strings to attach them to the operating rod. 9. We made a hat for Tin Man from a cone of silver card which we stuck on with shiny tape. 10. Our last job was to cover the arm-and-leg strings with straws. Each straw was cut to the length of the arm or leg, then in half again to make an elbow or knee joint. Then I cut each straw along its length and wrapped them round the strings. I thought our puppets were complete, but my daughter has just asked whether we could provide each one with a heart - just like in the story. I'm sure we will; that would be a lovely finishing touch for the Tin Family.

Facebook has been an amazing tool for me. I have made contact with artists from Brazil and the world who work with paper mache, painting and sculpture. The world is small and everything is close when we are online! Some time ago, I met on Facebook a girl from the State of Rio Grande do Sul who paints beautiful canvas. Her name is Andrea Pandolfi and I was charmed by her paintings! Besides painting, she also makes sculpting in clay and paper mache and restoration of old statues damaged by time. She is really a talented artist! I will soon receive a portrait of myself made by her. I cannot wait! I'll be super proud and I´ll run to post the photo here on the blog, stay tuned! לקראת חנוכה חיפשתי פעילות קלילה ופשוטה לעשות עם הילדים. רציתי להכין עששיות והתלבטתי איך לקשט אותן. חשבתי על אבני פסיפס, על ניירות תחרה, על צבעים ולבסוף, אחרי שיטוט בחנות יצירה, בחרתי בניירות משי. הצנצנות הן צנצנות זכוכית ממוחזרות (שהיו של רוטב פסטה, חמוצים וכדומה), את הידיות ליפפתי מברזל דק שחור. על הצנצנת עצמה הילדים יצרו קולאג' בטלאים של חתיכות קטנות של ניירות משי, הדביקו בעזרת דבק פלסטי, גם מתחת לנייר המשי וגם מעליו (כמו עבודה עם מפיות ומוד פודג'). התוצאות יצאו מקסימות, במיוחד בתאורת נר, בחושך :-) ובלי קשר לעששיות, אבל עם קשר לחנוכה, נעם התבקשה להכין לתערוכה בביה"ס דגם של חנוכיה מחומרים ממוחזרים. היא הכינה (בעזרתי :-)), חנוכיה אמנותית בצבעי הקשת, מצנצנות גרבר ריקות, מלאות במים צבועים. בתפקיד הנרות היא הדביקה צבעי קריולה. את הכל הדבקנו על פס של עץ צבוע. אני מאוהבת במה שיצא :-) מקווה שעובר עליכם חג חנוכה שמח ומלא אור. אני ביליתי את ארבעת הימים הראשונים של החג מרותקת למיטה אבל תודה לאל היום אני מרגישה יותר טוב! מזל, כי יש חופש לילדים :-) שיהיה המשך חג מואר ושמח! שלכם, גלי.

This is a Hebrew and English "SHALOM" (שלום) hand made ceramic Hamsa, a small wall hanging. I made these by hand so there might be small changes from one to another by size or color. This is a symbol for good fortune and luck. Many people in Israel collect Hamsas of different materials and styles, hanging all on one wall or spread them in their houses. This is a very common housewarming gift, a gift for a new office, a new job or a new position at work. Overall, it's a great gift for a new start of any kind. This original Judaica object is a one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic Menorah, made with beautiful gray clay. It is inspired by the landscape of my hometown and the area where I live - the lower Galilee (north district of Israel). I live with my family in Kfar Tavor, a small town with countryside houses (no high buildings at all) and lots of green is seen through my windows. My kitchen window overlooks Mt. Tavor and beyond, and on a very bright day, you can see Mt. Hermon with a little bit of snow on top. I found myself sitting in my studio, carving my town's landscape in the clay and carefully painting the details. אתם יודעים מה ? אני ממש אוהבת את החומר שנקרא דאס ! הוא לא תחליף לקרמיקה! הקרמיקה כבודה במקומה מונח כחומר לקדרות ופיסול אבל הדאס הוא חומר בפני עצמו, מעולה לקישוטי קיר, שלטים וקישוטים בכלל. את הדאס הייתי מתארת יותר כפלסטלינה שמתייבשת באוויר ולא כחומר קרמי, הוא חומר סינטטי לחלוטין ונוח לעבודה עם מערוך, קישוטי קיר, פרחים, פיסול של חפצים קטנים, לא הייתי משתמשת בו בשום אופן ככלי הגשת אוכל, מאפרה או חפצים שמישים ליום יום שצריכים להיות עמידים במים זורמים, אש ופגעי מזג אויר, כך הוא מחזיק שנים רבות. התחלנו ליצור עם דאס בחדר יצירה לפני כשנה, עבור חנות ה''בּוֹידֶעם'' שלנו (שעליה סיפרת כבר בפוסט קודם )ומאז אני צוברת ידע לגביו . תחילה יצרנו דמויות לפי הדרכות שלא ממש הסבירו את עניין חשיבות העובי בצורה מקצועית, אבל עם הניסיון שצברתי הבנתי שבגדלים שאנחנו עובדים עליהם, עובי הדאס צריך להיות בסביבות ה 1 ס''מ , אם לא, הוא מתעגל ומתעוות בייבוש, שביר יותר ופחות מרשים . התחלנו עם כפתורים נחמדים, מצופים במפיות וצרפנו אותם לאריזות מתנות החג. המשכנו עם ינשופים, בבושקות, ירח וכוכבים כמוביילים לחדרי ילדים ועננים אז איך עושים ומה צריך : חבילת דאס מערוך 2 לייסטים של עץ בעובי של כ 1 ס''מ סמרטוט לח להחלקה סכין דקה לאומנות צבעים, שאריות בדים, מפיות, ניירות צבעוניים וכל מה שבא לכן להדביק על הדאס כמובן דבקים לחומרים הנ''ל (מפיות, פלסטיק וכו') לכה מתאימה לחומרים שעל הדאס (בדרך כלל אקרילית) הדאס שמגיע בחבילות, לא צריך להיות קשה , הוא צריך להיות יציב ולחיץ. אם הוא קשה, הוא ישן ועבר זמנו. לכן כשאתם בוחרים בחנות חבילה, תנו לה לחיצה קלה ושימו לב שהיא לחיצה. השתמשו בחומר בכמות הרצויה כל פעם ואת השאר עטפו היטב בנייר הכסף ובניילון. כדאי לגמור את החבילה סמוך למועד פתיחתה, כי היא לא מחזיקה לאורך זמן. יש ללוש את החומר מעט ולשטח עם כף היד בצורה שווה, לשים את הלייסטים משני צידי החומר ולגלגל את המערוך עליהם (יש להרים מדי פעם את החומר לאוורור). בצורה זאת העובי יהיה אחיד ולא ירד את עובי הלייסט. עם סמרטוט לח אפשר לעבור ולהחליק את החומר ולסתום מפגעים (כמו סדקי יובש). אפשר לחתוך אותו כמו בצק, עם חותכני בצק או חותכנים לארגז החול. אנחנו יוצרים שבלונה על קרטון, מניחים על הדאס וחותכים סביבה עם סכין דקה לאומנות. אחרי החיתוך יש להחליק עם אצבע לחה טבולה במים, או סמרטוט לח. מניחים לייבוש של יומיים או יותר והופכים כדי שהצד השני יתייבש גם הוא. אם אתם רואים שבתחילת הייבוש החומר מתחיל להתעגל, תניחו עליו משהו כבד, אבל שלא ימעך את היצירה, רק ישמור על צורתה השטוחה , ההתייבשות תיקח יותר זמן. כשהחומר יבש אפשר לצבוע באקרילי, להדביק בדים ומפיות בטכניקת דקופאז' , לצבוע בטכניקת דיסטרסינג ואפילו להשתמש בטכניקת העברת תמונה ועוד כיד הדמיון. לא לשכוח בסוף למרוח לפחות 2 שכבות של לכה. וזה מה שיצרנו עם התובנות . אותיות : חתכנו סביב שבלונות שציירנו בעצמנו, צבענו באקרילי, את הנקודות יצרנו עם הצד השני של המכחול. עכשיו יש לנו שפע של צבעים על האותיות ואפשר ליצור אתם שלט של שם הילד. דגים וציפורים אבל לא רק לחדרי ילדים החומר הזה מתאים. מגי וולדון , קדרית אופנה, מייצרת ממשטחי חימר חרסתי גדולים שהיא יוצרת, קעריות עם הטבעות יפיפיות של מפיות תחרה . אפרת קובנט, אמנית מוכשרת, יצרה זר פרחים צבעוני ומשמח לב מדאס, אפשר להניח בעציץ ואפשר ''לשתול'' באדמה בעציצי המרפסת ולמלא את הבית בצבע ושמחה. צעד אחר צעד ליצירת משטחי תחרה: שלב 1. 1.בעזרת מערוך, מרדדים את גוש הדאס ( מגי משתמשת בחומר חרסינה, אפשר להשתמש גם בקרמיקל, חימר לקרמיקה ועוד ) לעובי של כ-0.9 מ''מ, עבה, מוודאים שגודל העלה המרודד הוא כ-10 ס''מ יותר מגודל מפית התחרה. מניחים את העלה המרודד על פיסת בד כותנה. 2. פורשים את המפית על החומר ובעזרת מערוך, לוחצים את המפית להטבעה, אל תוך החומר, עד סופה (שלא תבלוט החוצה). שלב 2. 3. בעדינות ובאטיות, מקלפים ומוציאים את מפית. 4. בעזרת ספוג רטוב, נקי וחלק , יש למחות כל חלקיקים רופפים של חומר, מהטבעה של התחרה. שלב 3. 5. בעזרת סכין אמנות, יש לחתוך מסביב לקצוות החיצוניים של עיצוב המפית (כ 2-2.5 ס''מ מהקו החיצוני), להחליק היטב את הקצוות המחוספסים עם אצבעות או ספוג רטוב, להחלקה מלאה. 6. לאחוז בקצות בד הכותנה הבסיסי(זה שהנחנו עליו את העלה), ולהחליק מתוכו את החומר לתוך קערית רדודה או צלחת עמוקה כדי להרים את צידי היצירה כדי לתת לה, צורת קערית. להדק בעדינות את החומר לתוך הקערה, לפרוס סמרטוט לח על הקערית וליבש באטיות כיומיים את צד ימין, להפוך וליבש גם את צד שמאל, עד לייבוש מלא. את הדאס, יש לצבוע בצבע הרצוי ולמרוח בלכה אקרילית . קעריות דאס מוטבעות בחותמות הדרכה נוספת של קעריות דאס מוטבעות, הפעם עם חותמות, בבלוג של אמה Gathering Beauty 1. יש ללוש את הדאס עד שמתקבל חומר רך. מרדדים את הדאס לעובי של כ- 5 מ"מ . 2. מטביעים חותמת בדיו (השתמשתי בחותמות אלה , ויש גם בגרסת עץ ) ולוחצים בחוזקה על הדאס. חוזרים על פעולה עד שמכסים את עלה הדאס עם עיצוב החותמת. נסו לא ללחוץ חזק מדי שאפשר אח''כ להרים את הדאס מהשולחן בקלות והעיצוב לא ימתח. אם הדאס נדבק למשטח העבודה, אפשר להניח אותו על נייר אפייה משומן (או להרים אותו עם כף שפכטל בעדינות) 3. מקמו את קערית זכוכית עגולה וחתכו בסכין אמנות מסביב לקערה, או לחצו את הקערה בחוזקה לדאס, כדי לחתוך אותו. 4. קלפו את העיגול בזהירות מהמשטח 5. הניחו את עיגול הדאס בתוך הקערית ובאמצעות האגודלים לחצו בעדינות רבה אותו כלפי מטה, אל תוך הקערית. נסו להימנע מלהפעיל לחץ חזק כי איפה שלחצתי חזק מדי הדאס התקפל והתקמט והדפוס הפך מעוות. 6. חזור על הפעולה עד לסיום כל הקעריות. להשאיר לייבוש למשך הלילה. למחרת להפוך ולימש את הצד השני. 7. כאשר הקערות יבשות, יש לשייף את כל הקצוות הגסים. (ואני מוסיפה שאפשר ורצוי למרוח לכה אקרילית על הקעריות.) הטבעת עלים בדאס או כל חומר קרמי עוד סרטון נחמד עם טכניקה שונה, קעריות פירות כשאני עושה חיפוש באינטרנט, אני מוצאת שפע של רעיונות שבקלות יכולים לשמש אותנו בעבודה עם דאס ושומרת אותם אצלי בפינטרס . כמו המובייל הזה מחנות מדליקה שנקראת Fine little day ומתאים לרוח הזמן עם עיצובים גאומטריים. אבל יש עוד המון הדרכות שתוכלו למצוא כאן http://www.finelittleday.com/ באתר crafts.tutsplus.com מצאתי הדרכה של Eleanna Kotsikou משגעת, לבתים קטנטנים. באמת אין הרבה מה להבין כי זאת הדרכה של צעד צעד עם המון תמונות ומה שלא תבינו תמיד אפשר לשאול . שימו לב שבהדרכה נמצאת הגזרה שאותה אתם צריכים להוריד, להדפיס ולהניח על חבילת דאס של 1 ק''ג הדרכה לבתי דאס אנחנו החלטנו ליצור מזה חנוכייה נחמדה ומנוקדת שכל אחד יוכל לסדר אותה לפי ראות עיניו דאס יכול לשמש גם כעיטורים על רהיטים כגון עיטורי ברוק אלה מהבלוג thrift diving העיטורים נעשים בעזרת תבניות סילקון, אליהם דוחסים ומחליקים את הדאס. כשהדאס מקבל את הצורה הרצויה, מוצאים אותו מיד מהתבנית (לא מחכים לייבוש) וחותכים עם סכין יצירה את העודפים מסביב. את ההדרכה בשלמותה, צעד אחר צעד, תוכלו למצוא בבלוג thrift diving . אין צורך בידיעת השפה, כי הצילומים מספקים את כל הידע הדרוש. אפשר למצוא עוד רעיונות אצלי בפינטרס ולהתאים גם רעיונות מקרמיקה. אם יש לכם עוד רעיונות, ממש אשמח לשמוע כי אהבתי את החומר הזה מאוד! בהצלחה
