Lyonel Feininger, American-born German painter, was the son of a concert violinist and a singer and pianist from Germany. In 1887 Feininger followed his parents to Europe, where he attended the drawing and painting class at the "Gewerbeschule" in Hamburg and then studied at the "Königliche Kunst-Akademie" in Berlin from 1888-1892. For one year he subsequently attended the private art school of the Italian sculptor Filippo Colarossi in Paris.

Giacometti once quipped that only Francis Bacon had a messier studio than he did, perhaps indicative of a certain pride that he may have taken in his own permissive disorderliness. Yet, there are obvious elements of staging in these compositions that remind us of the artist's overall control of his environment. We can see this in the present work, where a few strategically placed ripe-red apples appear almost enshrined on a stool at the centre of the composition. The tension between order and disorder is at the heart of these compositions, and Giacometti's painting captures the beauty created by these forces in opposition. Rosemaling is the decorative painting of Norway. The word rosemaling is a compound word of ros (decoration) and male (to paint). Rosemaling has a long, rich history in various regions of Norway, roughly from Trondheim southward. Rosemaling is a diverse art form that has its beginning in churches, where the walls and ceilings were richly decorated. As you walk through the museum, you will see many examples of old and contemporary rosemaling. You will notice variations between the local styles of the old painting, which have been picked up and further developed by contemporary painters. You can appreciate this especially when you view the rosemaling in the annual National Exhibition of Folk Art in the Norwegian Tradition at Vesterheim.
