1. TWO/ 2 pages of Measured STRAIGHT lines horizontally across the page. Use different drawing media...graphite (don’t smear), colored pencil (preferably black), ballpoint and felt pens (keep it at about .05 at the widest nib/tip width) 2. Diagonals across page at different angles. Remember to repeat the same overlapping line at least 8 to 10 times. the objective is to be able to aim at and repeat the muscle-memory and exactness. 3. Rhythmic jagged angles (scan example page 5) where you create one straight line and automatically attach at least one other to start building angular shapes. When you get the hang of it try inclosing a shape to create a ground plane. 4. Arcs & Curves. Draw two vertical borders and then draw left and right curves off of them (example page 6). In different media and remember the objective is to get you to repeat the action of pen/pencil over the same line about 8 times. 5. Compound Curves/ S curves. Its not just "squiggles" (example Page 7),its training your eye and hand and pencil to work together. Again different lengths and curves (challenge yourself. Don’t make it boring but keep it simple). 6. Circles and Ellipses (Example Page 8 & 9) These are easy & hard to get the REALLY correct symmetrically and balance to work fluidly. And that’s the key to become practiced and correct. Chances are your fist pass will be out of whack (mine sure were!) but make some very light passes around the shape (you might even make some ghost passes slightly above the papers surface to get the rhythms of it before committing). This is important so do a couple of pages if you have the guts and work ethic. 7. Last make a page where you show all these various shapes and processes interacting and overlapping. Don’t be sloppy and make sure all of these shapes and lines keep their integrity and line character. Use different media and design the page well. Note I sort of clustered some of the angular shapes into groups then merges them.

Hooray for Hispanic Heritage Month! :) Once again this year I was asked to create an art display celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15)... and man was I excited to get started! The majority of the students at my school are Hispanic... so getting to dive a bit further into the culture and it's art is especially exciting for our kids! This year I had a ridiculous amount of ideas for projects celebrating the culture (thank you Pinterest)... but had to narrow it down.. so I went with Aztec Suns, Zapotec Weaving, and Guitars of Paracho (inspired by this pin from Painted Paper Art). To begin the project I started with my usual PowerPoint presentation (posted on slideshare) giving the students some background information before the art-making began. We talked a bit about the economy of Mexico and attempted to figure out how Mexico could be ranked as the 2nd richest country in Latin America... and at the same time be the Latin American country with the 2nd greatest amount of poverty. The kids came up with some interesting answers... but eventually we landed on the explanation that a small group of people in Mexico own the majority of the country's wealth (making it a "rich" country) while a greater amount of the population lives in poverty (estimated at 44% of Mexicans). We looked at a map visually illustrating the poverty levels in Mexico and found that closer to the United States border less people lived in poverty than in Southern Mexico. Then we focused in on Paracho, Mexico; a city located just 2 hours south of Guadalajara. The interesting thing about the city of Paracho is that it is said to have more guitar-making artisans within it's population of approximately 17,000 people, than in the entire United States! Guitar making is a tradition passed down from generation to generation and is a source of income for the people of Paracho. The guitar-making also attracts a bit of tourism for the city as it hosts a Guitar Festival each year. Next I showed my kids two clips I found on youtube which highlights the guitar-making in Paracho. The videos are in Spanish with English subtitles... but that just got my kids even more excited (since most of them speak Spanish)!! Below is one of the videos (I claim no ownership). To see the ViewPure version to show in school: http://viewpure.com/57Gc1Iy9O8g So inspired by the fine artisans of Paracho and the bright colors and patterns of Mexican art, we got started with our project! I reviewed warm and cool color schemes with my students, then had each table select one or the other to use for their sheet of 12"x18" painted paper. Instead of just painting it though (which is still super awesome)... I wanted to do something different with the kids... so we sponge painted it! Was it a giant mess? Yes. Was it a pain to try to scrub like 30 tempera-paint soaked sponges clean? YES. Was it crazy enjoyable for the kids? Absolutely. The next day I had the kids create the body and headstock for their guitars with their painted paper by tracing a stencil I made. I normally DESPISE using any kind of stencil/tracer... but for this project I thought it would be necessary (especially since I knew they were going to be displayed for Hispanic Heritage Month and time was of the essence). Next I had the kids swap paper scraps so that they had paper of the opposite color scheme (to create a bright contrast) to create the sound hole, bridge, and any other details they wanted to cut and paste. Once the shape of the guitar was fully assembled, students had construction paper crayons and color stix to add any additional color or pattern they wanted. The next day I let students choose what color "strings" (pieces of gift-wrapping ribbon) they wanted to use, gave them sequins and buttons, and then let them go to town! I love how they turned out - so bright and colorful! I've been getting compliments about them on the daily from other teachers and students! :)

Second graders loved Robert Wyland so much that we did two projects inspired by him. Out first was Warm and Cool Waves, the second were these AWESOME underwater self-portraits inspired by this, this AND this project via pinterest. I Can statements: I Can draw a self-portrait with my features in the correct places. I Can draw a sea creature realistically. Day 1: To kick off the project we looked at portrait photographs that were taken underwater and discussed what looked the same and different as above water. I showed them this video of Wyland painting underwater to connect back to Wyland. How freaky and awesome would it be to paint underwater!? After all this chatting we got to work drawing the self-portraits. I did a draw along with them up on the SMART Board to help guide where to put features and how to draw the snorkel and mask. Day 2: I checked out a large variety of sea animal books from the library and had them look through the books and choose a sea creature they wanted to draw. Before they added it to their portrait they had to practice drawing it using the books and attempt to make it look more realistic. I really pushed drawing from the images and not from their minds. This was a little difficult of a concept for them, but by the last group of 2nd graders, I finally found the right way to describe what I meant. When their practice was done I gave them their portrait to add the creature to. Nearing the end of class we came back together to talk about what good coloring looks like with crayons and how to achieve it so those that were ready to color could start. Day 3: Refreshed our coloring discussion and then they got busy coloring. When the first few were done coloring, I showed my demo of using liquid blue watercolor to do a wash over the entire page. I really made a point to explain that any paper that was showing was going to turn blue so "bad coloring" would be really visible. Make sure they color the white of their eyes or their will possibly be tears when they turn blue.... These just make me so incredibly happy to look at!

In this project we take the larger Dragonfly and attach to a background for a nice portrait. I'm going to show you a few options for backgrounds ranging from canvas to paper. MATERIALS REQUIRED: For Dragonfly: - paper, pencil, eraser - DRAGONFLY TEMPLATE or you can make your own - thin cardboard (cereal box), chipboard, manila tag or posterboard - white paint or gesso, optional - acrylic or tempera paint - sharpie - old book pages, text - Mod podge - clear glass gems from the Dollar store For Backgrounds: - primed canvas, heavy cardboard, posterboard, or paper I'll go thru each background in the tutorial including the materials you need. PROCEDURE: You need to trace your template onto your thin cardboard, chipboard, posterboard, or manila tag. Cut out. I was using a cereal box so I primed mine. This makes painting in the colors easier. If you are using posterboard or manila tag you can skip this step. Paint in the body of the dragonfly. I've left my wings white. At school I know depending on the grade that this might not be possible so you have options: - you can cover them with text like in the previous post - you can go back over them with a coat of white - you can glue a white paper wing on top Because the wings are large you can pair this project up with a poetry or writing exercise. Here I've cut out words in old book pages to compose a little poem on the wings. You could also print it directly on with sharpie or print the text off the computer and add it to the wings. Other wing options are making it look realistic by adding fine lines with a fine tipped sharpie. Another nice option is to add some watered down paint to the wings and then while still wet place a piece of plastic wrap on top and smunch it up a little bit. Leave the plastic wrap on while the paint dries. For all wing types I added some glitter glue for that sparkle. For the eyes I took some glass gems and painted on some Mod podge where I wanted the eyes to go and then stuck the gems on. Now you could just use glue but I like Mod podge as it dries fully. In fact it leaves a real nice texture under the gem. You can seal the entire dragonfly with a coat of podge at this time as well if you wish. BACKGROUND OPTIONS: The background at the beginning of this post was a primed canvas. I wanted some texture on it so I used one of my favorite products, Drywall compound or filler. I use my spatula to spread it on the canvas and then I use my finger to add some detail. I also used a coffee stir stick to add some fine lines into the drywall. Leave to dry, about 6 hrs. Now if you do not have a primed canvas you can do the same technique on corrugated cardboard. This is cardboard that I primed with some gesso/white paint. I usually prime any cardboard as I find if I leave it plain it tends to darken my paint colors. Once the drywall is dry paint your background/substrate with acrylic or tempera paint. Start with the sky as it is furthest back, then the reeds. Glue your Dragonfly onto the background. This is primed canvas. This is cardboard.  Another background option is posterboard. Here I'm using blue posterboard and then taking a variety of painted papers, scrapbooking papers, and whatever was in my stash I cut reed shapes and glued them down.  Add your Dragonfly. Here is another option. I painted a background on some paper. Let dry and then using just construction paper and kraft paper I cut out some reeds and glued then down.  Attach your Dragonflies and you have a great project. If you have each child make 2 large Dragonflies you can send a portrait home and use the extra one in a large bulletin board display.
