Yesterday we talked about the recipes that defined the 1960s, and today we’re delving into the popular recipes of the 70s. While some food trends stayed strong into the 1970s, like fondue, Jell-O, and really anything from a mold, new recipe contenders also stepped into the ring. There was more of an emphasis on fresh vegetables and fruit in the 70s which corresponds to the opening of Alice Water’s Chez Panisse in 1971. What are your favorite recipes from the 1970s?

Deep purple berries & green vines, floral tiles in blackwork and cross stitch. Viola, from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, was shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria...The opening lines of the play include these words: "If music be the food of love, play on...it came o'er my ear like the sweet sound, that breathes upon a bank of violets..." Elizabethan blackwork motifs are worked in black and violet on cream evenweave linen, with fern green leaves and violet-grey beadwork. Biscornu are little eight-sided tuffets. They are used for pincushions, ornaments, or my favorite – lavender sachets. I put lavender from my garden in with the batting and they smell just lovely every time I pick them up. The finished size is 4 1/3 inches or 11 cm square. This 5 page booklet includes large easy to read charts with detailed instructions on how to work the design. The floss key lists DMC threads. All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman is the perfect read aloud for back to school. It is a great introduction to social-emotional learning about kindness, inclusion, diversity and confidence. During the beginning of the school year, it's so important to set up a strong classroom community and start building relationships. This helps with behavior management and student learning. This book does a beautiful job celebrating diversity and helping students feel safe in our classrooms. The following activities are included. Discussion Questions- questions to ask before, during and after reading to build student comprehension and lead to important discussion about being inclusive and celebrating our differences Our Favorite Lunches "Time for lunch-what a spread! A dozen different kinds of bread. Pass it around till everyone's fed!" The author shows students eating many different types of food that celebrate their cultures. Your class will make a bar graph showing their favorite lunches and then write about it. Then your class will sort kind and unkind things to say about other's lunches. Our Special Talents "We will learn from each other. Special talents we'll uncover. There's a big world to discover!" Students will draw and write about their special talents and interest. Then students will play a fun collaborative game with music to share their talents with their classmates. Vocabulary Activities I've included vocabulary posters for the following words: haste fresh community diversity adversity discover Then students will complete a vocabulary book. They'll illustrate each word and then do an activity to show their understanding of the word. Where We Come From "No matter how you start your day, what you wear when you play, or if you come from far away. All are welcome here." Students will draw and write about where they come from including their local community. NATIVE HAWAIIAN DESIGN In Hawaiian culture, kalo is a primary food source that has been widely cultivated across the islands and across Polynesia. Kalo is not only critical to the Hawaiian food system, but also holds deep ancestral ties as the kuaʻana (older sibling) of all kanaka maoli. The Iʻa Lau Nui design consists of three kalo leaves and pays homage to the ʻōlelo noʻeau (Hawaiian proverb), “ka iʻa lau nui o ka ʻāina”. The proverb translates in English to “the big-leaved fish of the land”, which refers to the lūʻau (taro greens), and its important place within the traditional Hawaiian diet. This “Big-Leaved Fish” is nutritious, vitamin-rich and the key cornerstone to any good laulau or lūʻau stew. The design also features our logo, which include the three mauna (mountain) pattern triangles representing the three hanauna (generations) guiding native peoples of today – past, present and future. We crafted this for those in mind who cultivate the land for kalo, love embarking on culinary adventures with kalo, or simply love to eat lūʻau, kalo or poi.
