With everything that we have to cover in a school year, an interdisciplinary project just makes sense. This resource expectations Social Studies and Language Arts. Students choose two ancient civilisations that they would like to learn more on. They then compare specific elements by doing some research, the presenting their findings in a comparison chart. By allowing students to make choices, they take responsibility in their learning and are more likely to succeed. It is also easier to differentiate the assignment by aiming for quality instead of quantity with special needs students. To finish the project, students use their findings to compare their own lives to the ones of kids from ancient civilisations. This comparison is done in a structured text, after planning in a Venn diagram. This resource includes: - assessment criteria checklist for student - list of suggested website for research - instructions and planning pages for research project (comparing two ancient civilisations) - comparison chart - rubric for research project based on most recent Social Studies and Language Arts Curriculum of Ontario - planning page with Venn diagram (comparison between life now and life in the ancient civilisations) - draft and good copy pages for written comparison - rubric for short text based on most recent Social Studies and Language Arts Curriculum of Ontario

This freebie includes three activities to get your kiddos started with the Grade 4 Ontario Social Studies Unit- Early Societies 3000 BCE-1500 CE) The first activity is a discussion cube that students can roll and have meaningful discussions with a partner or small group. They are able to share their knowledge of early societies with some diagnostic questions. The second activity are discussion cards. You can use these cards for partner talks or whole class discussions. They are great to see what your students already know about the early societies and how they compare to their current day society. They are included in colour as well as black & white. The third activity ties into the inquiry piece of the unit. They are topic cards for early societies. I use them on chart paper and have students move to each topic to generate questions with a partner or small group. Then we use the questions to help guide the rest of our inquiries! Thanks and enjoy! :) Full unit now available Grade 4 Early Societies Bundle!
This 95 page SOCIAL STUDIES and CIVICS resource provides teachers and parents with 778 progressive questions and answers that align with elementary learning targets and content standards for 4th Grade. It encompasses geography, history, early American heritage and exploration, and peoples and cultures of the world. The Civics questions aim to heighten children's awareness regarding the role of government, citizens, and the importance of becoming contributing members of the community, the state, and the nation. Why Ask Me Smarter? Because it is kid-engaging in that the BRAIN cannot resist a question! Because it is a simplified and stream-lined format in interpreting an elementary school curriculum and prescribed learning targets! Because learning is optimized through progressive questioning and spaced retention! Because many of the questions reflect "I CAN" statements per grade level. Can you identify your city on a map? What is the name of the highest mountain in Japan: Mount Fuji or Mount Kilimanjaro? What is the name of the driest desert in the world that is located in Argentina and Chile in South America: the Atacama or the Arabian? What is the national bird of the United States: the bald eagle or the hawk? Did the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age occur in ancient history or modern history? What is the medieval term for fighters supplied to the king by the lord: warriors or knights? How many senators does each state have in the U.S. senate: two or four? In what year was the U.S. constitution approved by all states: 1776 or 1790? What is the term for the national level of government: federal or judicial? What is the name of the elected person in charge of a city? It is a simple but important resource that serves to empower children with essential knowledge, making knowledge FUN-da-men-tal!
Have you ever felt like you would like to do debates with your class but weren't quite sure how to go about them? This package has been designed to make debates as easy and scaffolded as possible. Everything has been broken down and organized so that students get the most out of this activity. The package includes: visual organizers and explanations of how debates are supposed to look like, possible debate topics for grades 4,5,and 6. For grades 5 and 6, assuming that students can think more critically, I have linked the topics with Social Studies- which gives this project a cross-curricular dimension. Also, in this package, the structure of the debates is made explicit so that students know exactly what to expect. A set of debate rules/protocols are also included, and there is also a list of guiding questions to help students formulate their debate by better articulating their ideas and predicting their opponents' rebuttals. A bibliography sheet is included and is an organizer for students to use during the debates. Of course, to facilitate marking, a rubric has also been included. I usually work on this in conjunction with my "Discours responsabilisé" package- just to teach them (the students) strategies on how to politely agree/disagree with one-another.
