Vintage Smallwood Zoological Chart 2 - Porifera / Sponges Printed on heavyweight paper; produced for the W. M. Welch scientific supply company (Chicago, IL) for use in education. One of a set of 30 zoology charts - copyright 1939. Measures 24 inches (61 cm) wide by 36 inches (91 cm) high. Top margin of the chart has 2 perforations where the chart was placed in a large binder. The chart is in very good to excellent condition - with minimal discoloration and minor folding of the paper (white background) as expected with a chart of this age. A great classroom chart with nine illustrations of porifera (sponges) - with depictions of a simple sponge, bath sponge and a sponge colony. There are multiple section-views showing internal anatomy and cell types, as well as depictions of 3 types of canal systems (sycon, ascon and leucon). Individual illustrations have labels identifying major structures and regions. Well-done illustrations, excellent colors, and large size make this an appealing chart.
This is "A Popular Zoology", written by J. Dorman Steele and J. W. P. Jenks and published by Chautauqua Press of New York in 1887. This is an authentic antiquarian book of the era - it is not a reproduction, not a re-print, not a digital print. The hard cover book has 319 pages presented over 3 sections and 6 appendices. Following a short Introduction, The Invertebrates are discussed over 7 chapters titled: Branch Protozoa; Porifera; Coelenterata; Echinodermata; Vermes; Mollusca; Arthropoda. The last section deals with The Vertebrates with 11 chapters titled: The Tunicates; The Acrania; The Cyclostoma; The Elasmobranchii; The Ganoidei; The Teleostei; The Dipnoi; The Batrachia; The Reptilia; The Aves; The Mammals. There are many illustrations and drawings, all in black and white, a glossary, a detailed index, and several pages of other science books published by Chautauqua Press. The hard cover book is in good condition, with secure binding, complete and intact pages, some wear to the covers and the spine, and the pages have slight discoloration due to age, especially along the perimeters. The hard cover book measures about 8" by 5 5/8" by 3/4". In good condition. FREE shipping via Media Mail within the United States. Please note USPS says media mail can take 2 to 9 days to deliver. The renowned German reference work The Handbuch der Zoologie/Handbook of Zoology was founded in the 1920's by Professor Willi Kükenthal in Berlin and treated the complete animal kingdom from single cell organisms to mammals in eight thematic volumes: Volume I Protozoa, Porifera, Colenteratea, Mesozoa (1925); Volume II Worms (1933/34); Volume III Arthropoda ex. Insecta (1927/1932); Volume IV Arthopoda: Insecta; Volume V Solenogastres, Mollusca, Echinoderma (1925); Volume VI Pisces / Amphibia (1930); Volume VII Reptilia / Aves (1931); Volume VIII Mammalia. The Volumes Insecta (Eds. N.P. Kristensen, R.G. Beutel) and Mammalia (Eds. M.S. Fischer, H. Schliemann) continued publication into the present with the most recent contributions in English language. Covering nearly 100 years of zoological research, the Handbook of Zoology represents a vast store of knowledge. But with the speed of scientific discovery in the past decades, a new edition of the Handbook in a new form is required. Beginning in 2010 the Handbook of Zoology will be restructured and offered additionally as a database (Zoology Online) which can be easily searched and rapidly updated. The eight thematic volumes will be replaced with smaller and more flexible groupings that reflect the current state of phylogenetic knowledge. Faster publication times through online-prepublication, reference linking, forward linking and multimedia presentations will make the Handbook of Zoology highly attractive to both authors and users. Aims and Scope The Handbook of Zoology aims to provide an in depth treatment of the entire animal kingdom from the lower invertebrates to the mammals. It publishes comprehensive overviews on animal systematics

The Phylum Porifera include more than 5000 animal species, mostly marine, but includes about 150 fresh water inhabitants also. They found in all seas, wherever there are rocks, shells, submerged timbers, or coral to provide a suitable substratum. Most sponges prefer relatively shallow water, but some groups including most glass sponges, live in deep water.
