Well, hello, y'all! I had so much fun creating robots with you during Robot Week (all videos from last week are now up and able for you to view on my YouTube channel!) that I'm excited to share the theme for this week: Zany Scientists! If you notice, I even decided to step it up a notch by combining art AND science. That's right, every day, I'll go LIVE on my Facebook and my Instagram and share with you both an art project and a science experiment! Because I know we are all trying to conserve the materials we have, you can either join in on the experiment or simply watch. Because the videos will be archived on my YouTube channel, you can always travel back in time and rewatch the fun. Again, I'm using simple supplies that I hope you can find around the home. But, if not, know that you can swap out supplies with whatever you have on hand. No paper? How about newspaper or old magazines? No glue? What about a glue stick? Art making is all about thinking outside the box which is exactly what we'll be doing this week! Because some of our experiments are a little messy, look around your house for a cookie sheet or some sort of tray with a lip to it. This will help to contain any mess you make. Also, consider doing this portion of the art making outside! It's good to get a little fresh air and keep them mess at bay. The best part about creating is having fun. All of these projects were created with fun in mind. Don't worry about being perfect because there is no such thing! Just focus on the fun, y'all! We'll end our week with some clay that you can use over and again! This should keep you busy and creating until next the following week. Mark your calendars, y'all! And I hope to see you there. The children create never-before-seen animals for a "Zany Zoo." For all ages. Plan 1 to 2 sessions. KEY IDEAS Drawing from imagination Recognizing the unique characteristics which define an animal. Working with details and patterns. LANGUAGE realistic, pattern, unique characteristics YOU WILL NEED 12- by 18-inch white drawing paper Black non-toxic permanent markers (Faber-Castell markers are odorless.) Watercolor markers Pencils (optional) THE PROJECT Preparation Set out the pencils, markers, and drawing paper. Have the watercolor markers ready, but put aside until the drawings are completed. How to Begin Creating the animals Explain to the children that, by combining the parts of three or more animals, they will be creating one-of-a-kind, never-before-seen animals. Ask them to imagine an animal with, for example, an alligator's head, a tiger's body, and chicken's legs; or a flying cow with bird's wings and an elephant's ears. Discuss the unique characteristics which identify an animal, such as a squirrel's tail, a giraffe's neck, and a camel's hump. Emphasize the importance of patterns or designs, when identifying animals with similar body shapes, such as leopards and tigers which are immediately recognized by their spots or stripes. Have the children each draw one large animal by combining the parts of three or more animals. Older children appreciate drawing with pencils first and then going over their lines with the black markers. Younger children work best drawing directly with the black markers. When the drawings are completed, have the children color their animals with watercolor markers. Since this project is most effective when the parts of the animals are easily recognizable, encourage the children to use realistic colors as seen in nature. Naming the animals Have the children name their new species of animals by combining several sounds or syllables from the names of the animals used in the drawings, such as a "chelegator" (ch-ĕlĕ-gātor), which includes parts of a chicken, an elephant, and an alligator. The older children can work individually to name their animals, but plan this as a group activity with the younger children. Tongue twisters are fun, as long as the children are able to pronounce the names. NOTES It's helpful to prepare a list of the unique characteristics which define some animals to use when ideas run short. For a greater variety of even zanier animals, include insect and/or fish parts. Encourage the children to draw one large animal that fills their paper instead of several smaller ones. For the most impact, the animals need to be easily recognizable. Encourage the children to include lots of details and use realistic colors. Young children tend to fill in their work with the black markers, so be sure they understand that colored markers will be available when their drawings are completed. The lighter shades of watercolor markers work best because they won't cover up the black lines of the drawings. LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR WORK Ask the children to identify the different animal parts in the drawings. Discuss what information helps them to recognize these parts. What the children might say... Do I have to use three animals? Can I use ten animals? My animal has four legs and they are all different. Do I have to use gray for my elephant's legs? I wanted to stripe them like a tiger's legs. I've never seen animals like these before! What you might say... The never-before-seen animals are more fun if you use at least three different animal parts. You can decide the number of different animal parts to use as long as you have included at least three. Be sure to draw and color the parts carefully, so we can have the fun of recognizing each one. It will be easier to recognize the different animal parts if you color them as they are in nature. However, you as the artist can decide how to color your animal. You might have seen some of the cool Zentangle designs on Flickr....or other quilter's blogs (check out this blog....mamacjt). Well, I thought Zentangling might help me pass the time during boring meetings, so I bought a couple of pens and some paper with the intention of getting my "Zen" on....That didn't happen yet. But I figured....Why not make a quilt that looks like a Zentangle design? I searched the internet and found quilters quilting Zentangle designs on the quilts, but not any that actually made a Zentangle quilt. So I've been working on this all week.... Presenting my Zentangle mini-quilt/wall hanging....;-D I've never written a quilt tutorial before, but this basically how I did it. First, I cut a length of freezer paper approximately 25" long and drew the base of the Zentangle design--the outline rectangle and the "strings" inside. I used a medium point felt pen. The approximate dimensions of my design are 15" x 21". Next, I taped the freezer paper design to the table and cut a piece of white fabric the same size and taped the fabric on top of the freezer paper. Using a pencil, I lightly sketched some of the strings from the paper onto the fabric. I didn't trace the whole design (though I guess I could have)....I just made light marks where the pieces would intersect and come together, and some basic guides for when I needed to glue down my pieces later. At this point I made notes on the freezer paper regarding what sort of fabric I wanted for each piece (light, medium or dark). Then I cut out a few pieces from the paper and ironed them onto the appropriate fabric (using a dry iron). Be sure you are accurate when you cut....precision is important!! After they had cooled, I cut out the pieces and began applying them to the white fabric, in their correct positions. I used a spray adhesive on the back of the pieces so that they would be semi-permanently mounted on the white fabric. Do NOT discard the freezer paper templates until you are completely done with the project--you may decided to change some fabric somewhere in your quilt and you will wish for that template again!! Don't ask how I know this....LOL. I continued this process until I had all the pieces adhered to the background fabric. Then I looked at it for two days, made a few changes, and got it ready for the quilting. I "squared up the top" so that there was about 1.5"-2" of white around my Zentangle design. Then I cut a piece of backing fabric and batting (I used white flannel because I didn't want it to be too thick) slightly larger than my quilt top and used a spray adhesive to "baste" it all together. Just a light spray of adhesive to the flannel and my top and backing were stuck in place. I practiced a few different widths of satin stitching until I found the one I was most happy with and began stitching along the original "string" lines on the inside of the Zentangle design (using black thread). Once these were done, I widened the stitch length and stitched around the perimeter of the design. Then I did a little quilting with white thread in the border and applied my binding and a hanging sleeve. I applied small black buttons in the corners to show the dots where normal pen/paper Zentangle designs begin. This was a fun and easy project....I can see where it can be adapted to use more colorful fabrics with the black and whites. Maybe that will be my next project!!!

Let me tell you....those ladies at Buggy Barn are just amazing!! If you haven't made a quilt using the Buggy Barn method, give it a try! It is kind of like stack, whack, shuffle and sew....but a whole new level. You usually layer about 10 (or more) layers of fabric and lay a freezer paper pattern on top with the design penciled in (by you....from the template they provide). Then you cut, shuffle, shuffle again and start sewing. You will get the wonky, modern look of something that is either free form or paper pieced...but without all the hassle. There is a little trimming involved after each bit of sewing, but very little fabric is wasted. Then I trimmed to a consistent size...9" x 14"....Tada.... I bought this kit at Quiltique (years ago) and am just getting around to sewing it together. It need to hang in the dining room after Christmas so I'd better get on it! It will really be more like Feb/March before it gets quilted, I'd imagine. Sadly, I can't really remember if there was an inner border, then an outer border? Anyhow, I'll post a pic once the top is completed...however that turns out! Tonight I'm going to put all the blocks on my design floor and pin the top....;-D More pics tomorrow....

Today I'm excited about sandwiches! Not real sandwiches, although I do love a good chicken salad. Nope, I'm excited about the strategy sandwiches I found so I decided to try a Calm-Down sandwich for lunch. Since I de-cluttered my office by putting a lot of stuff in my new suite, I now have room for a small bistro table. One student, who comes at lunch to practice her calm-down strategies, and I made this sandwich while she ate. The ingredients - some meat and cheese, two tomato slices and a piece of lettuce - represent the things that we've talked about trying when the worries start to overwhelm. We put it in a zipper sandwich bag and she tucked it in her lunch kit. This activity leaves SO much room for variation. How about a respect sandwich? I see math integration, too, by having the students cut and identify their shapes. (The lettuce could easily be an oval or a triangle!)
