For our latest Young Women Activity, the girls really wanted to do a "Chopped" competition. They have been asking for quite some time, so we finally put it together. We did it a little different than the show though. We only did a dessert round and no one was chopped. There was an award for every team. Here are the details: First, I divided them into four groups. They didn't get to choose their groups. I had them draw their colored groups from a bucket. I had a dishware set that included two plates and one bowl in four colors. That is the way we identified the groups. Next, I told them the rules. They had 30 minutes to make a dessert. They were told they would be given four mystery ingredients. They had to use those four mystery ingredients and then they could use anything I had on the counter. If they needed something else they could ask and if I had it my pantry or fridge, they could use it. There were special conditions though. I had a little trivia game before we began. The trivia game was to give some penalties to other teams. If they answered the question correctly, they could choose the punishment for another team. Every team had to have a punishment. *see files at the bottom They were divided in their groups and then given the chance to open the mystery ingredients. I told them they could start and so it began. They had a lot of fun making the food. Some people asked to use the blender, others wanted to use the stove. I was there to help accommodate and make sure nothing got broken. :) Here were the final plates: The final part was the judging round. I invited some of the young women turning 12 this year to be the judge. My husband ended up being a judge too since one of the girls couldn't make it. They were to give out 4 different prizes, 1 to each team. Best Overall, Most Creative Best Tasting and Best Appearance I printed my little awards on regular paper and then taped them to a foam board and cut them out. I gave the judges a whole bunch of forks so they didn't have to double dip in any plate. :) I couldn't pass up my husband's face in this picture. Sums up the judging pretty good. Overall, it was a great success! The girls absolutely loved it! If we did it again I think we will try a main dish. The beginning of every year, I have a YW board meeting with all my YW leaders. We go over leadership training, our calling responsibilities {per the handbook of instruction}, teaching responsibilities, & the Personal Progress program. This year I really wanted to discuss the Handbook Section 3, "Leadership in the Church of Jesus Christ." But also tie the evening into the new 2013 mutual theme of "Stand ye in Holy Places." I wasn't quite sure how I was going to pull it all together but was hoping to figure it out before our meeting. :) As I was studying the handbook, reading talks & watching videos on serving the YW of the church when I came across the talk from conference a few years back by Sister Beck called "Mothers who know..." I had a light bulb moment!!! I thought I could do my leadership instruction & call it "Leaders who know...STAND." I would use each letter of the work STAND & talk about our responsibilities as YW leaders {per the handbook}. Here is what I came up with... I pulled out a section of the handbook to share with my leaders for each letter that we discussed. S-Strengthen-Handbook 10.1.1 & 3.2.3 T-Teach & Testify-Handbook 3.2.4 A-Apply-Handbook 3.2.1 & 10.5 paragraph 3 N-Nurture-Used a portion of Sis. Becks talk "Mothers Who Know...Nurture." D-Do more by doing less-Handbook 3.3.3, 3.3.4, 10.8 Here is the handout that I made for each of my AWESOME leaders to that home that evening so they could remember the 2013 theme. I just printed a picture of the temple out on card stock that I had put the word "STAND" onto & modge podged it onto a 6x6 tile. Thanks again to Mindy Evans Photography. Who has the most beautiful pictures of various temples and allows you to use them for personal use. The evening turned out GREAT!! I am so lucky to be working with the most amazing YW leaders on our board. They are fabulous!! Good luck to all you YW presidents planning your board meetings. We had a FANTASTIC New Beginnings last night. Our theme was based on the Dr. Seuss book "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" The invitation: This is what the room looked like: Each girl participated in some way (some with decorations, others with speaking parts). We had an AWESOME guest speaker. She is a musician and has written mostly EFY music. She connected so well with the girls. The best part of the night was her performing an original song, written for our New Beginnings that had "Oh, the Places You'll Go" in the title, but she tied it in to Stand in Holy Places. We gave each girl crazy Seuss-like socks to remind them to always let their feet take them to holy places. The socks: The girls LOVED the socks. They put them on right away and some were willing to pose for me. I got the socks from Target. For June 2015 the topic for "Come Follow Me" is, Priesthood and Priesthood Keys Here are the links to each organizations page for the month: Young Women, Aaronic Priesthood, Sunday School Since, each organization has their own outlines and each lesson will need to be specified to the individual class members and there are already amazing outlines that can be used for guidance, I am only going to share some general ideas that can just be used as supplements. The great thing about this program is to allow the spirit to guide you to the needs of the youth in your class. Prepare before hand, Pray for guidance, Listen to the Promptings of the Spirit and invite the youth to do the same. Here is the Scripture for the month: “The keys of the kingdom of God are committed unto man on the earth” (D&C 65:2). Lesson Ideas: There are so many topics to choose from this month. I am just giving supplemental ideas to a few of them. Please refer to the church's website for the wonderful outlines they have for all of the topics, see links below. A great idea to begin each lesson is to invite each class member to come with a scripture or spiritual thought to share with the rest of the class. (When I was a youth we did this in one of my classes, it is a class I loved to attend and had the most participation in it.) Young Women: What is the priesthood? Give each member of the class a piece of paper that has the word "Priesthood" on it. Invite the youth at the beginning of the class to write on the paper what they know about the priesthood. Write the word Priesthood on the board. Invite the youth to share some things they have written. Play the video, " Priesthood Blessings Available to All " Invite the youth to take turns reading from the True to the Faith Book, section "Priesthood". Stop after each part and invite the youth to discuss the paragraphs. What are my responsibilities in the work of the priesthood? Invite the young women to watch the video, "Sweet is the Work". Give each of the young women a paper that says, "What are my responsibilities in the work of the priesthood. Invite the young women to write some things they song in the movie that could answer this question. Printout "Daughters in My Kingdom: Blessings of the Priesthood for All: An Inseparable Connection with the Priesthood" and divide into sections for each young women to read a section and tell the class about the section they read. Invite the young women to continue to write down on their paper their responsibilities in the work of the priesthood. What are the keys of the priesthood? How do I receive the power and blessings of the priesthood in my life? What does it mean to sustain my Church leaders? Aaronic Priesthood: (See ideas above under Young Women) How does worthiness affect priesthood power? Show the young men a flashlight. Place the batteries in the flashlight and turn it on. Explain that the flashlight shines and does it's job because it was given the power to do so. Turn off the flashlight and take out one of the batteries. Turn the flashlight back on. Does the the flashlight work? Why not? Take out both batteries and put them in the wrong way. Turn the flashlight back on. Does the flashlight work? Why not? Read the following quote from Come Follow Me: "Priesthood authority comes through ordination, but priesthood power requires personal righteousness, faithfulness, obedience, and diligence. Even if we receive priesthood authority by the laying on of hands, we will have no priesthood power if we are disobedient, unworthy, or unwilling to serve." Invite the young men to share how they think the flashlight can be compared to worthiness and it's effect on the priesthood power. You could further explain. That the flashlight had the "authority" to give light. When the batteries were put in the right way the flashlight had the "power" to shine. Same with the priesthood. One might be ordained with priesthood authority. But the power of the priesthood only comes when things are right, when you are living righteously and worthy of that power. But when one does not live worthy of the power it is like taking a battery out, or putting them in the incorrect position. They power will not be there. If you find yourself with a battery missing or in the incorrect position. Simply use the principle of repentance and get everything back in the right order. Play the video, "Priesthood Power and Priesthood Authority" Invite the youth to answer the question, "Why is it important to always live worthy?" Play the following video, "Sanctify Yourself" What is the priesthood? See YW above What are the keys of the priesthood? What are my duties as an Aaronic Priesthood holder? Provide each young man with a piece of paper. Ask them to list the duties they have as an Aaronic Priesthood holder. Take turns reading, "Fulfilling My Duty to God (2010), 23, 46–47, 70–71" You could also show the video, " Fulfilling your Duty to God" or "Faith in the Priesthood". Why should I serve a mission? What does it mean to sustain my Church leaders? Sunday School: How can I participate effectively in councils in the Church? Watch the video, "Participate in Councils". Invite the youth to share with you what the video taught them about participating in councils. Write down what they say onto the board. Make sure you write, "A Revelatory Experience" on the board. Invite the youth to discuss some things they can do to prepare to participate in councils. Invite the youth to share any examples or experiences they have had while serving on councils (such as class & quorum presidency meetings and BYC). How do women and priesthood holders work together to build the kingdom of God? Before hand prepare to bring a string or long piece of yarn and a toilet paper roll. On the toilet paper roll write with sharpie marker, "Building the Kingdom of God". Invite a youth to come up and hold one end of the rope ask them to suspend the toilet paper roll in the end by holding on end of the string. They should not be able to do this. Invite another class member to come up and have them hold the other end of the string, with the toilet paper roll strung through the middle and the other youth holding the opposite end. Invite them to suspend the roll in the air. Explain to the youth that Heavenly Father create male and female. Each have a distinct roll and each are NECESSARY in working together to build the kingdom of God. As a class read through "THE FAMILY: A PROCLAMATION TO THE WORLD" Invite the youth to point out the different roles each person has, as well as how men and women can work together to build the kingdom of God. Invite the youth to share how they can prepare now to have the family relationships described in the proclamation. Why is it important to follow the counsel given by priesthood leaders? How can using scripture study skills help me learn more about the priesthood? How can I use stories to teach others about the priesthood? First Aid Certification Handouts {free printable for YW Camp}
For the last month we have had our YW work on Temple Time Capsules. We encouraged them to not open them until they are engaged to be married. (temple picture found HERE I added the ingredient part. It can be found below) We checked out a Canner from our Local Cannery to Seal the cans. The girls thought this was sooo cool. After a month of gathering and making things to put in their cans we had a combined YW activity to seal the cans. It was such a fun night. We made it like a mock wedding reception Here is the invite. I found this cute gold and embossed card at walmart for super cheap! Then just printed the info on gold velum I had the leaders bring their wedding dresses. It was so fun to see all the different styles. My mom had a bunch of doors we have used for wedding. They were perfect to hang the dresses on. We had chicken salad sandwiches, fruit, and alittle candy "bar". I picked a few fresh flowers from Janes garden just to help pretty up the place I also had the leaders bring wedding pictures. The girls thought this was so fun! The Miamaids had fun activity for us. They had all the leaders sit at this table. They asked us questions about dating/marriage. ex. What is our favorite date, how did we know we were in love, How can they prepare to be married in the temple, How our husbands proposed, etc... Here are a few of the sheets we had the girls fill out before hand. (just right click and save to your computer to print) We took pictures of the girls at the temple to put in their can. I printed these labels on Shipping Labels I found at Walmart. You can get 2 to a page. They are an Avery product. Each label measures 5.5''x8.5'' The can is a suppose to be physical reminder in their room to keep the temple in their sights. For a combined activity we had the girls make wedding Collages. I went to local bridal shops and got old catalogues and magazines. I also went to paint stores to get paint chip cards. We had the girls put what cakes, dresses, rings, colors, etc... on their collages. It was a great opportunity to also talk about modesty and virtue. I also went to the distribution center and got a few free articles, and pamphlets about happy marriages written by the prophets. I also grabbed a couple things about finance and virtue. We also made Temple Recommend holders. I just got plastic badge holders from walmart for $1.50 for a pack of 8. And bought a little temple picture card at the Distribution center. I had the girls write a note to themselves on the back of the card. The Laurels made cute little handkerchief dresses. I found a tutorial here. We didn't tell the girls but we also had their parents, leaders, and the bishop write them all letters. I told them it could be anything. A letter with their testimony of the temple, a thank you card, a congratulations note. I think the girls will love this. The Beehives made a cute little heart bracelets. I forgot to take a picture sorry. They had an activity at BYU where one of their dads works and they got to make these amazing wooden discs for each of the girls and leaders. How cool is that? It was a great night. My SIL had done it a few months ago with her YW and I have been excited to do it for months. The girls all had a great time and I know it will be an activity that was meaningful and that they will remember!
Adam & I were lucky enough to be able to be on our ward's Youth Conference Committee. We've been so excited for the past few months...going to planning meetings, and working with some awesome people to coordinate a retreat for our Youth that they wouldn't forget and that would hopefully change them for the better. Adam and I were in charge of planning some fun games for a few hours each day...the kids were such a blast!! The Youth Conference was held at a cabin up at Bear Lake. It was beautiful!! Even though it was a bit rainy and overcast almost the whole time, I was happy (reminds me of home -- Vancovuer, WA). Before heading out, the kids were divided into 5 teams (each with a leader) for a RoAd RaLLeY! It was a scavenger hunt that the kids thought was just supposed to pump up the energy and get them some prizes ;) but what they didn't know was that there were undercover actors planted along their way that were all in need of something...one was a homeless man in need of food & money...another was a woman at a cemetery mourning her young daughter that passed away, she just needed someone to talk to...another was a woman in a grocery store who dropped all her oranges. Even though helping these people was inconvenient for the youth (i mean, they were in it to win it!) and it would've slowed them down, every group did awesome and helped them out! We actually videotaped the actors after, asking them how the kids interacted with them, and they were all very positive :) Back at the cabin, the kids saw the video of the actors, and then we showed them a video of the Good Samaritan...teaching them that service usually never fits with our schedules, but it we'll be blessed for it!! Oh, and on our way to the cabin we stopped by the Salomon Center in Ogden for some awesome activities...we're talking indoor sky diving (iFly) & indoor surfing/bodyboarding (iSurf)! The kids had a riot!! * Here's Adam showing us how it's done in the iSurf ...he's not a skateboarder/snowboarder like some of the other boys, so it took him a little bit to get the hang of it...but that didn't stop him! * * Michael (one of the youth) was way good at the iSurf!! * * Mitch in the iFly wind tunnel...their 1st time in the instructor keeps them pretty low to the ground and helps them get a feel for how everything works * * Brooke on her 2nd round, going way up there! * * Adam & I waited at Smith's to interview some of the actors from the scavenger hunt...it was sunny...and their was a SNOWCONE SHACK...perfect ;) * * Our good friend Chris & Adam outside with the guys...surrounding the BBQ * * I was the instigator of the late Friday night..."let's play another game guys!!" here's us getting ready for another round of SPOONS...i love our youth * Saturday morning we got up, filled out bellies with a huge breakfast, and headed to Minnetonka Cave. It was a bit rainy, but we were prepared!! Garbage bags anyone?? * Brooke & Hannah sporting our awesome rain gear * * Our little hike to the cave...gorgeous * * Minnetonka Cave! * * They gave each formation pretty creative names, which made the tour pretty interesting! This one was Kermit's castle :) * * these were my favorite rocks ... they're called Popcorn Rocks * When we reached the very end of the cave, the tour guide (who just happened to be LDS) had everyone hold onto the "Iron Rod" and he would turn out the lights while he hiked back a ways...it was DARK...thank goodness for that Iron Rod! ;) * Adam holding on the Iron Rod ;) * Back at the cabin, we had everyone play a really fun game!! It's called "Who Did What." It's a great way to see how well you know people, and it helps getting to know them better too :) It was a hit!! * Zach, 2nd from the right, trying to hide behind his paper cause he couldn't keep a straight face, haha!! * * The leaders had some great unique stories!! * After lunch, we headed out for what was called the "Burden Hike." We expected it to turn out really great... it turned out even better. * Here's the hill the youth had to climb up...they were given buckets at the bottom, and told not to let the buckets touch the ground * * Along the trail, 5 leaders were ready with a shovel to scoop dirt & large (we're talkin' some 30 lbs.) rocks (burdens) into their buckets, while telling them what the burden was...some said "you lied to your parents," others said, "you gave into peer pressure & started drugs" * * The youth were really struggling toward the top...the buckets were full of "burdens" * * but near the top, our awesome Bishop Howard waited for them...he was there to help them carry their bucket to the top * * After the Bishop explained to them that this hike is a lot like life, and we don't need to carry our "burdens" the whole way up, HE helped them get rid of their "burdens" & lightened their load * * Mitch, who has Asperger's syndrome & is pretty small for his age, was carried up by a leader...everyone was so touched by this Christ-like act of kindness * * And this was another awesome thing that happened, the last kid (the biggest and strongest) up the hill was James...the leaders filled his buckets to their max...he was struggling...but his brother, Michael, & sister, Hannah, came down to help him the rest of the way...Family is always there for you :) * * Here are most of the men (Adam, Dave, Chris, & Chris) who filled the kids' buckets with "burdens" * We had a solid testimony meeting at the top of the hill...I tell you, Youth Conference builds up the leaders as much as the Youth!! :) * Shepard View Ward Youth Conference 2009 * Again, we felt so blessed to be a part of such a fun & uplifting experience with our ward...it gave us another confirmation that this is where we're supposed to be :)

First week down! The first week back is always a busy one but we are already off to a great start. I decided this year to start off all the grade levels with the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. I have always used it to start off kindergarten but I really want to make International Dot Day more of a school wide celebration. I want to encourage all my students to just try and to let them know that they are all artists. I love the meaning behind the book and it goes right along with my expectations for my classroom. I am going to have all my students create different kinds of artwork using circles or dots and use them to liven up the hallways. I am already planning my outfit for Dot Day :) and I would love to get them all involved too and encourage them to wear polka dots on that day. (That's my dream) So here are some of the projects that we are working on... I introduced first grade to Kandinsky showing them examples of his artwork. we discussed how he used color, line, and shape to create his paintings. Then, I gave them each a 12 by 12 inch paper that we folded into fourths together. They opened them back up and drew concentric circles in each of the four sections. I had them take crayons to outline the pencil lines. We used tempera cakes (which I love!) to paint in each of the circles with different colors. When I go to display them, I want to connect them together so that it looks like a large version of Kandinsky's Color Study, Squares with Concentric Circles. With Fifth Grade, I wanted to connect it to the book but also use this project to review the Elements of Art. I also introduced them to the Op Art movement. They also began with a 12 by 12 inch paper. I talked to them about linear perspective (which we worked on in fourth grade so it was also a review). I told them they needed to start off with a dot on the paper which they could put anywhere. Then they had to draw ten lines going out to the edge of the paper. Then I showed them some samples of ways to do the next step. They could color the sections in an AB pattern. Or for more interest, they could make curved lines going on direction in the A sections and then make the curved lines go the other way in the B sections. Then they spaces could be colored in like a checkerboard. (My students are the greatest! I had so many take this and go into so many other directions too that I haven't even thought of. They were all so different. I love when that happens!) Next, we reviewed shape and form. I demonstrated how to use value to change circles into spheres. I have a class set of SafeT compasses in my classroom which I love. The students think they are really neat too (once they get the hang of them) I had them choose a construction paper color that would stand out against their background. They had to make at least five circles of different sizes using their compass. We talked about value and shading with colored pencils to turn the circles into spheres and used the element of space to determine where we should put the spheres once they were cut out. The smaller ones went closer to the dot they started with and the larger ones we closer to the edge of the paper. They were all very successful with this project and it is definitely one that I would do again. I will post more Dot Day lessons soon:)
