One of the highlights of our Young Women's Camp this year were our Camp Fire Sing-A-Long's. For the first time in FOREVER we were able to light an actual fire. In years past we have not been able to due to fire restrictions. We were so excited that it didn't even bother us that it was so HOT!!! I love our Camp Fire Sing-A-Long's because not only do we sing some of those silly camp songs, but we also allow the Young Women to highlight some of their talents. Each year at our Pre-Camp we have a YCL that has a sign-up sheet ready to go for the younger girls to sign up to share musical talents, skits, poems, artwork, how to demonstrations, etc... We usually allow up to 5 per evening. This is almost like a mini talent show outside. This definitely is one of my favorite parts of camp! You should try it...I promise you will love it too! Here's a general idea as to how we run the evening at the Camp Fire: 1. General Gathering Songs 2. Warm Up Songs 3. Rounds 4. Silly Action Songs 5. Skits/Stories/Talents/Etc... provided by those that signed up 6. Slower Songs 7. Reverent Songs 8. Evening Prayer At our first camp fire this summer we had just our YCL'S up at camp. We added a few extra moments of fun...THE SPARKLERS! Some of our Leaders and Young Women were a little shy around them while others couldn't wait to get their hands on them so they could spell their names and wave them in the air. We also used this time to plan our SNIPE HUNTING experience for the younger campers. Instead of Snipe Hunting this year the girls decided to go PETON HUNTING (this is a made up name for a miniature character that looks like a mouse/squirrel/etc... See photo - we have a really good artist in the bunch that drew what a PETON looks like. The girls had the choice between the bird and the mouse like character. We went with the mouse!). After seeing my Girls Camp Pocket Post, you are probably wondering, "What are all the note cards in the pockets?" Well let me tell you...... They........ are.....SUNSHINE NOTES! My sister Candace came up with Sunshine Notes years ago, and they have become a tradition for her and I to initiate them into the different girls camps we are involved in. Simply place colored or white lined notecards on a picnic table with stickers, markers and pens; then watch the fun begin! The girls and leaders get sunshine and love through those notes to last them a LIFETIME! Everyone writes uplifting sweet messages, short and long, to just about everyone at camp. There is ONE rule! We give a warning at the start of camp, if there is ever ONE rude or mean remark on a note we stop all sunshine notes! This is a SAFE/ HAPPY place, there is no place for rude/negative comments. We are spreading SUNSHINE, not rain. It's sad we have to even warn them, but it's better to be safe than sorry. On a lighter note, we have NEVER had anything like this happen, but we always prepare the girls and leaders. Girls and leaders go away with a STACK of SUNSHINE at the end of camp. I bought over 1000 notecards last year and we RAN OUT! On the last day I was frantically cutting colored paper I just HAPPENED to have thrown in a tub last minute, so girls could write their last sunshine notes! It was BEAUTIFUL. One girl told me that she put her sunshine notes up from last year as a border in her bedroom! One leader keeps them on a key ring and takes them with her in her purse. She pulls them out when she needs a little pick me up! THESE SUNSHINE NOTES BLESS LIVES! Our "Sunshine Note Station" was CONSTANTLY overflowing with girls and leaders writing sweet notes. We’ve all been there. The dreaded moment when you somehow are supposed to magically conjure up months of weekly activities that will uplift, inspire, engage, and dazzle a group teen girls with diverse backgrounds and interests for Young Women’s. Let’s start with the goodness. We’ve polled thousands of former young women and young women leaders and compiled the most extensive modern list of ideas for Young Women’s activities available. Before we dive in, we do need to have a little heart to heart. In the past, it wasn't uncommon for a majority of activities to center on motherhood and being a wife. While these are important things they may not always be age appropriate or even universally applicable to all young women. It is important to remember that young women are children. Encouraging children to focus on marriage, weddings, and childbearing puts unhealthy pressure on girls, can be limiting, exclusionary, and can give off weird child-bride vibes. There is not a girl in the church who doesn’t understand the important role marriage and children play in the Church and the Gospel. We would argue that there are far more girls who lack understanding of how to value themselves as individuals without the relationships of wife and mother. The truth is, more and more of our young women will grow up and not marry right out of the gate. Not only is that ok, it’s actually really healthy. Many will not be able to or choose not to have children. A good portion of them will experience divorce. What we don’t want is for these young women to be scrambling to understand their worth as individuals because we only prepared them for how to live the gospel within one specific life experience context. What’s the solution? Focus more on principles and less on specific applications. Our young women are very smart. If we focus on helping them learn the principles of the gospel, they will be able to figure out how to apply it to their own lives, progress, and growth. No matter what their lives may look like. Our goal here is to help prepare young women for whatever their Heavenly Parent’s unique plan has in store for them. This list is packed full of activity ideas that will stretch, educated, prepare, inspire, engage, and strengthen young women. Not to mention, have some fun. Above all, remember that young women are still kids. Having fun is not only incredibly healthy, but crucial to their development. Life Skills: Stock market 101: The key here is to help girls understand why this is important for their future. Understanding investing basics are key to being a financially independent adult. Credit and credit scores 101: Teach the importance of having and managing a credit card. It’s common for LDS youth to fear any type of debit or credit card. Help them understand how to use and pay off a credit card each month so they can make important future purchases like cars and homes. Learn about 401Ks and savings Understanding or communicating boundaries: Have a trusted local therapist teach the girls the importance of respecting their own boundaries. Cars 101: How to change a tire, check the oil, and change a cabin air filter. Help them understand what each of these things should typically cost and how often they should do them. How to create and follow a basic budget to reach financial goals. Get first aid and get CPR certified. Don’t forget to review baby and pet CPR. Learn how to start a fire, set up a tent, and make a simple camping meal. Camping is such a fun hobby for many young adults, but the first adventure can be intimidating. Practicing in a safe environment helps make future adventures so much easier. Easy recipes and cooking basics. Remember the goal here is useful life training. Not how to be a future mommy or wife. All young women will need to know how to healthy feed themselves. Not all young women will be wives and/or moms. Learn about self defense and safety tips. A routine review of basic self defense and personal safety precautions can be a matter of life and death. Learn about preparedness and 72 hour kits Great Outdoors: Scavenger hunt around the neighborhood Go swimming Go camping and learn to set up a tent Rock climbing / Rappelling Go on a bike ride Gardening. How to create and grow a small herb garden. Then maybe learn how to use those herbs to make fun drinks or treats. We have LOVED working on RS Lesson Kits - picking out quotes, coming up with a creative handout for each one; it really has been a cool experience to dive into the lessons that way. Despite the storm brewing in the sky that night, we had a GREAT turnout for our May Relief Society meeting! The theme was "Rock, Paper, Scriptures." We focused on ways to come closer to the Savior and "hold to the rod." Carrie opened up the evening with some personal experiences and a wonderful video emphasizing the importance of daily scripture study in our lives. We then split into three classes and got to take part in some great discussions. ROCK Teryl told us about her grandfather and the house he built one rock at a time. It was a three year process but the results were a house with a strong foundation and walls that would stand through the years. Even after the house was vandalized, it still maintained its structure and has been fixed up and still stands today. She tied this in with our own lifelong efforts to build upon the rock of our Redeemer. Helaman 5:12 states: And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. PAPER Brianne led a great discussion on journaling and how it blesses our lives-- and the lives of our posterity! We talked about different kinds of journals we can keep: scrapbooks online journals (someone suggested we all try out www.ldsjournal.com !) good old fashioned pen and paper journals family journals scripture journals gratitude journals blogs Not only can we benefit from looking back at past journal entries, but our future children and grandchildren may be able to gain something from them as well. If you think about it, the scriptures themselves are record keeping and "journaling" of ancient prophets. So, in a way, our personal journals we keep can be like our own "scripture" we are writing for our future children and grandchildren to learn and grow from. SCRIPTURES (Holding to the rod): Kimberly lassoed us up and took us on a little obstacle course to drive home her point. Her instructions to us were only this: "Hold on to the rope and follow me." So the group was all walking along clumped together in the loop of the rope. We thought getting up the narrow stairway to the stage was difficult... ...but that seemed like nothing when we realized we hand to climb under a small table!!! Kimberly just kept repeating "Just hold on to the rope and follow me." Most groups went through the whole thing trying to stay inside the loop of the rope. This last group made the realization as they were trying to cram under the table that Kimberly never said they had to stay in the loop. They just had to hold onto the rope! They realized that it would be much easier if they untied the loop and just each held onto it in a straight line. This was a great object lesson that brought us closer together as sisters (literally). We discussed the point of this exercise and applied it to our own journeys in life. Sometimes we get too caught up in doing things a certain way or a way we think it should be done or even the way that MOST people do it. But, that isn't always the most effective way. Ultimately, our instruction is to "hold to the rope and follow me"-- or hold to the rod and follow Him. We need to try to get rid of those distractions or unimportant things that sometimes make it so much more difficult than it needs to be! We shared different things we personally do to bring ourselves closer to Christ and our Heavenly Father-- different ways we have found to do things that work well for US personally. Whether it was methods of scripture study or ways to get rid of distractions in life. After these awesome messages we joined back together to close our meeting. Carrie invited each of us to take a rock from the table in the back of the room and write on it something that was a "spiritual rock" in our lives. Either a favorite scripture or quote. We can display these rocks somewhere as a reminder of having that strong foundation in our lives. And... of course we enjoyed some tasty refreshments together! We had fruits and veggies and dips. Our new friend Ann even brought some delicious Pilipino dishes for us to try! A tasty sesame noodle dish and some potstickers. We always have a great time getting together as sisters and visiting together. And tonight was no different.
