"The Wild Blue Yonder," like all the paintings in the "Doing with Dad: Silhouette Series," is a rendering suggested by a fond childhood memory (or a memory I hope my children hold fondly!), a memory that, in essence if not in detail, may be shared by many of us. As with the other paintings in this collection, the goal here was to execute an interesting background yet allow the silhouettes the focus to tell the story. My personal memory goes something like this: Dad was big man, 6' 2" tall, pretty good-sized for a man in those days, taller than any other man in my life. Be they neighbor, friends' dad, teacher, minister, whoever - no one was bigger than Dad! So atop his shoulder seemed like a L-O-O-O-NG way up and balancing on just his one shoulder (as opposed to astride his neck) seemed daring to me! I loved it! I'd hold my arms out like wings and I'd fly into the sky. My plenty active imagination would have me soaring with the birds, whipping through clouds, the whole trip scored with my unending airplane sounds which were, as I'd soon find out, perhaps "juicier" than I knew. After such a "flight" we came in the house, Dad wiping his forehead with his handkerchief. "Hot out there?" Mom asked. "Nah, it's nice out," Dad responded. "But this kid just about drowned me with his spit, making all his airplane noises." Dad smiled at me, winked and ruffled my hair. After completing my sketch, I began by wetting the entire surface of the paper thoroughly. I then started at the top, using pre-mixed paint, and allowed the colors to blend some. Before it dried, I used a paper towel to pull paint from the paper to render the clouds initially. After the area dried a bit more, I used a damp brush to soften edges. Once all had thoroughly dried l used a stiff wet brush to pull more paint for cloud highlights . After allowing the background to dry thoroughly, I then painted the silhouettes using a black of my own mixing (I never use black from pan or tube). "The Wild Blue Yonder" is a 8 x 10" image on 9 x 12" Arches cold pressed, 140# watercolor paper.
