'Community Engagement Officer', oil on canvas, 120 x 90cms, 2023-24 Occasionally I will stop and think how much painting is extremely difficult to do well. It requires an extraordinary amount of mental stamina and focus, skill and experience which can only be developed with many years of practice in the studio (I’ve now been painting seriously for nearly 35 years), many hours looking at other paintings, and an incredible will and determination. And still it frequently ends up being a complete mess or falling desperately short of what you hoped. So, you carry on…that’s the reason you carry on. It’s either that or give up. I haven’t given up, and in the last couple of months I’ve made some new paintings I’m pleased with that I would like to share…. I’m continuing to develop a renewed interest in painting the figure in the landscape, but I’m also interested in developing some more specific portraits of individuals, such as this one of Nick (at top of post), Community Engagement Officer for the Birmingham Canal and River Trust, who has been working with my students. I worked on it in the last week before Christmas, before then deciding to repaint the whole thing in about 3 hours in January. It was part of a process of experimenting and trying to decide what I don’t like as much as what I do. This is to develop a language for the portraits that’s a break from the ones I’ve done in the past and thinking about and applying some of the lessons I’ve learned from 12 years of landscape painting since. Consequently, I’m not sure what I think of this painting just yet, but I know from experience the answer as to how to develop things further is not by doing any more work on this one, but keep doing others and keep exploring… as yet untitled, oil on canvas, 120 x 150cms, 2023 I’m much happier with this large painting of a canal scene set at a spot I frequently pass on my dog walks and have made two other largeish paintings from, one set in the winter (one of my favourite paintings) and one in the summer. I wanted to do something more autumnal at the same scene and kept returning through late October with my camera, and the dog, to capture the changing autumn colours. I was inspired by the glorious autumnal fiery colour of the autumn I had witnessed on a recent trip to Scotland, but the colour in the Midlands was rather different… Still, the dun greens, ochres and darker colours were still autumnal. I could have made things fierier with vivid oranges and yellows, but there is something about an authenticity that always nags and sits whispering on my shoulder… One morning as I took some photos this barge came into view from beneath the bridge and slowly glided past me, it’s owner eyeing me somewhat suspiciously as he passed whilst I took some photos. I was excited and slightly unsettled by the experience, but I’m not sure why. When it came to creating the painting, I decided to include the barge, with the fear that it may look a little twee, but by keeping it quite small enveloped by the surrounding landscape I think I managed to avoid any tweeness. Instead, I think it has captured that unsettling, almost funeral, feeling I felt on the towpath that morning. I think it’s one of the strongest paintings I've made in a long time….
Growing up shooting skateboard videos with his friends, Paris-based designer "Alexis Jamet":https://www.instagram.com/alexis_jamet/ was tasked with making the titles and illustrations for these early creations. Eventually branching into producing zines about the Paris skate scene, he coupled this creative pursuit with clothing and board design for his local skate shop. “I then wanted to study filmmaking, but I wasn’t academic enough, so I found a hand lettering school which was a better option me,” he tells It’s Nice That. “After that, I naturally drifted into graphic design and, more recently, animation.”

Reggie Laurent is a modern art painter who lives in the Atlanta, Georgia area. He often works on black canvas, painting his organic shapes and squiggles first in white and then covering them in colored acrylic. My fifth graders have viewed the work of Reggie Laurent, and while they would LOVE to emulate his stule of acrylic-on-canvas, it just isn't in our budget! SOOOO, we did the next best thing: cut paper on black. Students used paper from the scrap box and glued it onto a sheet of 12x18 black paper. We then used colored oil pastel to layer and doodle designs on top of the cut paper. A white "thread" of oil pastel was then woven through the remaining negative black spaces to tie the whole project together! This was really a "no-brainer" for my fifth graders and they liked learning about Laurent and his style of painting! When it comes to ingredients, we believe less is more. Sometimes the simplest desserts turn out to be the most delicious; and this peach cobbler is the perfect example. With its warm, juicy filling of delicate peaches, cozied up under a buttery, golden topping, this easy peach cobbler recipe is a quick way to whip up a classic dessert that's positively bursting with decadent fruit flavor. It's perfect for a special occasion or a weekday treat, and it’s super easy to make thanks to Bisquick™ Original Pancake & Baking Mix. So, what exactly is a cobbler? The flavors are very similar to a traditional fruit pie, but with a slightly more laid-back presentation. Instead of a neat, rolled-out pastry crust, a cobbler has a more rustic, biscuit-like topping simply dolloped on top. This gives the dessert its charming, “cobbled” appearance—like the cobblestone streets of 1800’s England that the dessert was named after. The result is a delightful mix of textures: a soft, syrupy filling with a slightly crispy topping. Cobblers can feature a wide array of different fruits, from cherries to berries, apples to sweet potatoes--but peach cobbler may be one of the most-loved varieties. And it’s easy to see why. Peaches have a light but sweet flavor that positively screams summer. Though using fresh peaches for cobbler is always amazing, our easy delicious peach cobbler recipe uses canned fruit to make prep an absolute breeze. This incredible cobbler recipe comes together with just a few simple ingredients, giving you an easy dessert that’s guaranteed to please—especially when served warm with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Whether you serve this no-fuss peach cobbler at a picnic, a backyard barbecue, or just because, this dreamy dessert is bound to bring smiles all around.

The past few months my students have been making feathers for a group mural. This idea was inspired by my friend and celebrity in the art community, Cassie Stephens! Head on over to her blog and check out her magical art teacher'n treasures at Cassie Stephen's Blog!! Her original inspo was international street artist, Kelsey Montague. Her inspiring murals challenge people to ask the question "What Lifts you" "What makes your heart Soar?" My students are going to be writing about their passions and inspirations that "lifts" them! I want each student that comes to my art class to feel as though they are walking out with wings on their back, so they can bravely rise up to their dreams with courage and passion! I want them to feel confident in themselves and know that the sky is the limit! First, students painted on watercolor paper with tempera paint using a value gradient of tints and shades using one color plus black on the left and white on the right. They had to blend the colors so thet the different shades did not look like stripes One group did primary and secondary colors red, orange, yellow, green blue, and violet. The next group would paint intermediate colors, red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red=violet Fourth and fifth graders used 9' by 24' paper and 3rd graders used smaller paper the next class, students then traced different shapes of feathers using white prisma color pencils and cut them out then they decorated them with unique lines and designs with white prisma color pencils My wonderful and extremely talented student teacher, Naz Kaya Erdal and I layed them out on three large sheets of black butcher paper until the feathers looked symmetrical. Once we finished the shape, we taped each feather down to the paper with painter's tape Then I hung that bad boy with TONS and tons and TONS of staples!! The next morning the kids were SO excited to find their feathers turned into GIANT wings!!! I hope the parents who come to visit will snap a pic in front of the wings and post to #ArtisFly and #riseupandsoar hashtags for social media!
