My freshmen will be getting the joyous task of learning how to tell time in Spanish I. It is one of the most challenging lessons due to having to learn tons of vocabulary. Not only do they have to learn vocabulary, but they have to do a little math....oh, that mean math..gggrr! I decided to make something fun that might be able to help them out some ;) We all know that high school students will be watching the clock like crazy through-out the class, so here's my Sunflower Spanish clock. Maybe after watching the clock everyday, this will start to catch on. This can be easily manipulated for teaching little kids to tell time or any foreign language. It's so easy to make the flower clock. You just need card stock, scissors, a marker, some tape, and a round clock.
So, YAY! We finally sold our house and moved! What a big job...and time zapper! Thankfully we were able to find a great rental (and by great I mean good neighborhood, clean, good size, etc.) close by until we are able to move closer to home (Vermont!) About 7 years ago, reading comprehension instruction became a primary focus of our staff development at our school. As part of our professional reading our Principal purchased Strategies That Work for the entire staff. The aim of comprehension instruction is to get our students to interact more completely with their reading. To help our students not only think about what they are reading but what they are learning. As a teacher with lesson plans to do, papers to correct, common formative assessments to create you might think this is just another thing to do. But when it comes to reading, comprehension is probably the most important thing. This book has been very helpful in teaching these comprehension strategies to our students. Just the Resources that Support Strategy Instruction pages at the back of the book are worth looking at. It lists Great Books and Author Sets to Launch Strategy Instruciton as well as great books for teaching content by area. I found this book so helpful I went ahead and purchased the second edition. The second edition differs in that it has samples of student work. After all reading is connected to writing. Using these strategies with double entry journals during guided reading gives me as a teacher great insight to my students thinking, prior knowledge and weaknessess as well as strengths in writing. Both these books suggest author charts. The second edition has a section in the appendix that depicts what these charts might look like. The teachers at our school adapted these charts to fit the grade as well as English language level of our students. Each strategy has its own chart. Because we are a dual language school these charts then had to be translated into Spanish.The wonderful dual language teachers at my school translated and or created some of these charts. As dual language teachers we have to make instructional decisions about which strategy to present in which language. The great thing about these are that you can use one in Spanish during whole class instruction and then use the English version during a small group guided reading lesson. (I'd like to note that some of these charts were created and laminated without correcting errors such as missing accents). At our school we have also broken these strategies down by grade level. In Kinder we focus on Visualizing Making Predictions and Connections. In first grade we review these as well as add Retelling and Inferring.
So today im linking up with for the blog hunt which im so excited!! i wasn't sure what to create because i wanted to make something for all grades...i want to be able to reach a lot of the teachers out here so i got to thinking...what kind of issues do i have a lot during the school year....and it easily came to me... HOMEWORK! ...gosh..there's always kids and who complete half the homework and leave the rest blank...and then in my head im like how do i grade their half complete homework...so i came up with these easy and fabulous things this is perfect for grading their assignments....5 is excellent and it goes down to 1 which is incomplete and late...i think this is perfect for assessing the students on their homework ...you can refer to this when figuring out what to give them for the day...i usually givie homework mon-thur... so this year i plan to daily give them a grade for their homework the night before...at the end of the qtr i will add up their scores and then divide to get their final grade!! After i created this i thought what else do i need a rubric for ...and i came up with these as well thanks to Michelle from 3am Teacher for the fabulous borders arent these so useful...i think grading classwork is so important...it's such a huge part of their learning..there's so much more than assessments and spelling and math..it's about how they work and how much effort they put into their work...do they try their best or very little effort? this will help you grade them on their classwork...and even behavior!! have those kids who can't stay in their seat? this will help you assess them in that as well....for the behavior you don't have to give them a grade everyday because it can be a bit much.... i think giving them a score at the end of the week is perfect..you will definitely remember those kids who were chatty and those who were helpful and kind....you can grab these awesome freebies HERE at my TpT Store...please let me know what you think as i love to hear from all of you =) i told you i had a surprise for you all in honor of me being newly engaged!! As we work on more comprehension strategies in my classroom, I've noticed that many of my students don't know what the word "prediction" means! So, I hurried and created a mini-lesson to help! First, you introduce what predicting means {guessing is what I compare it to} and use these cards to hang on the board: Then, you tell them that when they predict what is going to happen in a story, they can say one of the following: We then read the book, Do you Want to Be My Friend? By Eric Carle. {source} This is a perfect book to predict! The mouse is looking for a friend. On each page it gives a hint as to what animal he will ask to be his friend {it shows their tail}. I have my kiddos raise their hand if they can predict what animal it might be. They will say: I predict... or I bet... or I think... After that, we practice our predicting skills! I use these animal posters and cover up most of the picture and have them predict what animal it is. {so when you download this mini-lesson, you'll have to cut out your pictures and find a piece of paper to cover up most of the picture} They record each animal on their recording sheet.
