So you've got the sketchbook, you're painting and sketching like mad capturing those summer memories, why not add some fancy lettering. The gracious folks at FW Media have provided me with another book to review and giveaway. "Calligraphy Magic" by Cari Buziak is a more technical manual. I have only perused a few calligraphy books in my time and I must say I am quite happy to have this one in my collection. Highlights: - 15 alphabets showing you all the strokes (I love the versals) - nice tutorial chapter to show you how to make all those calligraphy strokes - like most painting/craft books it includes a chapter on tools and supplies, usually I find these chapters redundant however in this case I really liked it. It was fairly short and had some good tips, like proper care of your dip style pen. - there is a whole chapter on ornamentation, gilding and coloring. This was my favorite part of the whole book as I have always been fascinated with illuminated manuscripts. The Celtic Knotwork instructions were great and I can see myself adapting this into a project for school. - there is also 12 step by step projects for you to try. I found the presentation of the projects a little formal. I think there are so many applications here it would have been nice to see some examples from contributing artists on how they incorporate lettering into their work. But hey maybe that's an idea for another book. - I was very interested in the chapter on how to create your own computer fonts as I would love to create a personal handwriting font - practice papers for photocopying are also included Like everything in life it just takes practice. This is my ink box. I don't do a lot of ink work but I love adding white ink details to paintings as well as metallics. After reading this book though I realize how badly I want to be able to add that fancy lettering......so practice I will! So if you are interested in this book you can enter the giveaway by leaving me a comment on this post or sending me an email at [email protected] - giveaway open till Wednesday July 13th/2011 at 11:59pm. The winner will be picked by random integer. - open to US or Canadian residents only - I'll post the results on Thursday If you are interested in purchasing the book "Calligraphy Magic" you can check it out here at the FW Media Bookstore. It's on sale now but I also have a coupon code (40% off) for you: July 11CM Good Luck everyone! (Disclaimer: Review copy provided to me by FW Media)

I recently learned the expression "border trouble", in this case referring not to immigration---nor to illuminated borders, like the one above---but rather to the sometimes-daunting obstacle between the idea for a piece and the point at which it begins to take shape. Since I sometimes struggle mightily to move through that region, it helps me to think of it as just a transition, kind of a bothersome ordeal one has to go through to move into the pleasure on working on the piece once it starts to come to life, not to mention once it is finished. It's school fundraiser season once again and I created this piece to raise some money for a good cause. Artwork doesn't always do well in a silent auction but this was displayed nicely and went for a pretty penny! The border outline came from the fabulous collection of the Graphics Fairy (you really need to go to that site, and bookmark it!); I was able to take a little shortcut and print it onto tracing paper (rather than actually tracing it) and then transferred it to Arches 140 lb hot press with Armenian bole. Because of the nature of the quote, I used more colors than I usually would have in the border. The ink is Pelikan (with some powdered gum arabic added); the rest of the design is gouache, pen, and 23K gold leaf. I used a [left-handed] Brause 1.5mm nib; the image is about 7.5" X 10.5". I used my Logan Compact Mat Cutter (which has come in handy more times than I can count) to cut the mat, then popped it into a frame I picked up at Michael's half-price. Ta-dah!

Gothic was a popular medieval calligraphy. It was also called Blackletter for the dark appearance of a written page. The letters are square in shape, and are written at a 45 degree angle. Click on the photo for a larger image of the Gothic alphabet. Try copying the simpler lowercase letters, then move on to the more elaborate uppercase letters. Make sure to use a 45 degree pen angle. Try writing your name, squeezing the letters close enough together that you could fit just one pen stroke between them. This technique was used by monks copying manuscripts, in order to save parchment.

In modern Chinese there is a set of more than 400 syllables, made of two elements: an initial, the sheng and a final the yun. The first part, the sheng is the consonant that begins a syllable. The sheng is followed by a yun that is usually a vowel. The Chinese computerized fonts for words processor include 6500 characters for the simplified form.

Chinese Word Order 中文词序 In the Chinese language, the basic word order is subject-verb-object (SVO), as in English. Otherwise, Chinese is chiefly a head-final language, meaning that modifiers precede the words that they modify. In a noun phrase, for example, the head noun comes last, and all modifiers, including relative clauses, come in front of it. Generally, Chinese varieties all feature SVO word order. However, especially in Standard Mandarin, SOV is "tolerated" as well. There is even a special structure to form an SOV sentence. 5 really simple example sentence structures to get you started: Subject + Verb: "nĭ chī" ... Subject + Verb + Object: "nĭ chī fàn" ... Subject + Time + Verb + Object: "nĭ jīn tiān chī fàn" ... Subject + Verb + Object + ma: "nĭ jīn tiān chī fàn ma" ... Subject + Time + Verb: "nĭ jīn tiān chī" 词序 word order 字 word, character, letter, calligraphy, symbol, style of writing 词 word, term, speech, statement 单词 word, individual word 话 words, word, dialect, saying, talk, speech 言 word, speech, character 言辞 words, word, what one says 笔墨 pen and ink, words, word, writings 约言 pledge, promise, word Unlike French, German or English, Chinese has no verb conjugation (no need to memorize verb tenses) and no noun declension (e.g., gender and number distinctions). Chinese vocabulary seems to be built up in a very logical way. Once you know some basic words, your learning process will speed up.
