You NEED to try these 8 GENIUS hacks for bulletin boards!
I LOVE teaching at my school...but I HATE the halls! Seriously, so ugly! I also wanted a cute way to display our Lucy Calkins writing (first year). You will need to spray your clothespins with glitter. This will give them a base layer so they will look pleasing from all angles. Be sure to spray a glitter sealer over this so you don't have endless glitter on the floor for the rest of your life! Now to make these clothespins really grab attention!! Paint Mod Podge over only the top of a clothespin. Gently dip in glitter and viola! These are seriously gorgeous! Spray glitter sealer one more time over the top layer of glitter. Grab your favorite 12x12 cardstock paper! Hot glue glitter clothespin to the cardstock. Then hot glue a thumb tack onto back of each cardstock. (My school has tack strips in the hallway. If you do not have tack strips you can just apply double sided tape and attach to the wall.) After glueing I found out (the hard way) that a little hot glue and thumb tacks do NOT stick together! I had to go back over each one and surround the thumb tack with hot glue. The pointy part is the only part sticking out of this glue cocoon! Attach to tack strips (wall). Enjoy! If you make this type of display for your class, I would love to see and hear how it went for you!
Weaving paper is an elementary skill that is important but is no joke to teach. Take that simple skill to the next level with this concept of weaving together two similar paintings. Paper weaving is great for fine motor skills, & dexterity. The painting portion of this lesson is a great way focus on color theory too!

W.O.W. - Wonderful Original Work of ArtIf you are unfamiliar with this concept, here is a quick rundown from The Art of Education University:"WOW stands for “Wonderful Original Work of Art.” Invented in a Teaching for Artistic Behavior classroom by Barbara Berry, a TAB educator in Brunwick, ME, the WOW cycle is a way to motivate students to create long-term projects. Students learn to envision a piece of art, plan it out, and execute it by a deadline." -Kelly PhillipsThis is something that I hav
Classroom Management: Using a WOW Board No comments Classroom Management, student recognition, WOW board Have you heard of the WOW board? This tool is not a brand new idea, but I only started using it last year. And, I intend to keep using it! Using a WOW board is a great (and super easy) way to recognize individual students and reward their choices, achievements, and efforts. It is also a great way to boost self-esteem too. What is it? The board is simply a table that is printed onto poster sized paper. The table is labeled with letters along the bottom, and numbers along the side, creating cells. It is laminated so it can be used again and again. I printed my board using the standard poster size setting on our poster maker. I know that some schools may not have a poster maker, but there is no rule that says your WOW board has to be poster sized! How do you use it? When you see a student making a smart choice, setting a good example, making gains, or whatever you feel should be recognized, they add their name to the board. They can choose any space they want and write their name in the selected space. Many WOW boards have 100 spaces, but I like for it to fill up quickly, so my board has only 25 spaces. Since I use other means of recognizing students, like reward tags, I didn't want a board with 100 spaces. Since the board is laminated, students can use an Expo Vis-a-Vis marker to add their name. This makes it easy to erase and start over when we're ready to do so. What do you do when the board is full? When the board is full of students' names, I choose 5 students to receive a "prize." Really, they get to choose a classroom reward coupon. Prize buckets and I don't get along (#clutter). The classroom rewards cost me nothing and the kids love them. You can find all sorts of classroom reward options on TPT. Then, I erase the board and we start filling it up again and the cycle repeats. How do you choose the winners? I usually just pick five random cells and write them on a sticky note, without looking to see whose names are in those cells. For example, I might write down A3, C4, B5, D2, E1. I call out the cell number and identify the name of the student written in that cell. They're a winner! You could write all your cells (i.e. A1, A2, A3, etc.) on color tiles, small slips of paper, or anything else you can fit into a small bucket. Then, when it is time to choose your winners, you just pull a tile, slip of paper, etc. out of the bucket and match it to the name in that space on your board. Using a Wow board is just another way to recognize your students and motivate them to do their best. If you'd like to give it a try, you can download my free template. If your school doesn't have a poster maker, don't dismiss the idea of using a WOW board. You could easily print this on regular paper and just use a smaller sized version. The kids will still love it! DON'T FORGET IT, PIN IT! Share It:

Hello Everyone, We are about to begin our unit on "How To" writing pieces. Our youngest authors will be learning that they can use their writing to teach someone how to do something. They are all experts at doing something, right? :) What a way to share their enthusiasm for telling how something is done. Let them write!! I am sharing my mini unit on how to teach this important component of our littles' writing portfolios. This unit can be used in conjunction with any theme, science, social studies, etc. that may be in your curriculum already. During our landforms unit, I will have them write about how they made the Edible Landforms Cookie. You can get that unit ***Here! :) Here are a couple of shots of what is included in the writing unit. Teaching the concept of using transition words is emphasized in this unit. The mini unit is 16 pages of mini posters, planners, and mini book pages to help your young authors become teachers. You can get it ***Here! :) Please leave me a note if you think this is something you can use, or if you would like to see a different format. Thanks for stopping by our little window and taking a peek! Have a wonder-filled weekend! Joyfully! Nancy
