Iseabal Hendry’s woven leather and lace creations are a beautiful expression of historic and contemporary craft traditions combined. For Bard, Iseabal has woven her magic into leather sporrans, with the rest of the construction made by McRostie. We've also worked with Iseabal to tweak the design, making these sporrans wearable for both gents around the waist and anyone across the body as a bag. Woven Warmth is a pattern using the woven knitting technique. The pattern includes a shawl as well as a cowl. It requires small amounts of yarn that are carried up the work as well as yarn that is stranded across. You will need to use bobbins or yarn butterflies for this project. The pattern is laid out in sections as follows: Navigating This Pattern What is a Tabby Weave Selecting Your Colors Arranging Your Colors - Shawl Arranging Your Colors - Cowl Pattern Notes Woven Warmth Shawl General Instructions Woven Warmth Chart Photo Collage of Shawl Woven Warmth Cowl Photo Collage of Cowl There are photos to accompany the written instructions to help explain the technique. Color advice is given and to help you select colors, color examples and color-in pages are included. Small amounts of 20 colors were used to make the shawl shown. 4 colors were used to make the cowl. For the cowl, I used Isager Spinni held together with Isager Silk Mohair, approximately 35g of each color, 3.5mm (US4) needles. It measures 60cm (24”) circumference, 40cm (16”) front center depth, 20cm (8”) back neck depth. It is hoped that you, the knitter, will develop your own color/yarn arrangement, your own Woven Warmth.

The Open Weave Wrap pattern introduces a new woven knitting technique. The background is eliminated so you are only working with warp and weft threads. The pattern has detailed how-to visuals and leaves itself open to use yarns from your stash or purchase yarns using your color choices. The knitting is not difficult, it requires only knit and purl stitches. You will be required to work both stranded and intarsia knitting. I suggest using bobbins to hold your warp yarns. West Wool Tandem version requires ±660 yards/605m, the Corrie Worsted version requires ±560 yards/515m This techniques opens up a whole new world to explore in knitting. While working it, try and think of variations that you could try such as smaller warp threads or larger wefts. There is so much experimentation to be done with this technique.
* I love the delicacy of Peggy Osterkamp‘s fiber work. Once an apprentice to Jim Ahrens in a production studio, Osterkamp has introduced hundreds of students to weaving theory and production weaving.
I included the weaving below the picture, because there's just no way I could explain this coherently. I have lots of fly-aways and layers in my hair, so the braid actually looks better messy than clean and tight in my hair. It's a nice style for a day of errands or just hanging around and nothing fancy. :)

.....the stash of painted warps, that is. Usually I get all that I dye during the summer woven over the winter but I've got some I never had time to get on the loom. This was off the last warp that came off the loom - chartreuse weft. Here's another off that same warp using olive for the weft. There's still one more using forest green for the weft that's not ready for it's photo op yet. Both of these scarves are now up for sale in my etsy shop. And here's the painted warp I wound on the back beam this afternoon, it's a rayon slub, enough for 3 scarves. I haven't decided on weave structure yet, am considering just plain weave, I know hard to believe, but am thinking for this warp/colors it might be best, maybe a bit warp faced plain weave. It was a bugger to wind on as the slubs were sticking to one another, guess that happened during the dyeing and drying. There's one more painted warp, tencel, in the wings to be woven. Then it's time to do some dyeing again.
